^ i understand that's how some people in the rural areas do it, but man, shooting an animal is a little barbaric. i'd much rather my pet go peacefully and quietly.

Yes it may seem barbaric but in reality, providing that whomever is handling the rifle is a keen marksman it is still a quiet death and I would probably so far as to say less traumatic than being put down at the vet.

At the vet, it can be traumatic going there for the animal. Most pets are very in tune and have very keen senses where they will know something is amiss.

The bullet to the brain is quick and painless, although maybe messy.

Either way, It's no fun having to put an animal down :\

ewww, gosh. i just couldn't imagine doing something like that. :( would totally break my heart.

i've known vets to make house calls for such occassions and when that terrible day comes, that's probably the route i'll go.

In Jacksonville, Florida the Humane Society has what they call the Rainbow Room.

You can go into the room and be with your pet when they euthanize them. When I took my dog in they couldn't get a vein because she was dehydrated and the had to inject it directly into her heart. It was the hardest thing I have ever had to do.

Now, I look at her urn on the entertainment center, and am able to smile remembering the good times.

My doggie just got put down a couple weeks ago. She was 15... severely arthritic, blind in one eye, incontinent, completely deaf. She ate very little and had lost something like 7 pounds out of only 42 in her last months alive.

She was SO HAPPY and whenever I would come home, she would play like she was a baby again!! Since she was deaf, she would bark like crazy when she got excited, and never stop, so I would start tossing her fluffy christmas toy across the room, and off we'd go on a rowdy rendition of fetch.

She fell a lot, and slept most of the time, and wouldn't really eat, and had terrible separation anxiety - she would not let you out of her sight when she was awake.
Over the summer on her birthday, we made her a steak and a peanut butter dog cake, and put a pretty flower lei around her neck. It was awesome.

She had so much life in her... until one day, my Dad called me at 9 am and told me she couldn't get up. I went to see her, and she was dead in the eyes. She couldn't wag her tail. She couldn't make a sound. She couldn't drink anything (but we got her to rally for biscuits and celery). It was heartbreaking. She got so excited when she got in the car... she loved those rides.
RIP Lady <3

Anyway, we KNEW it was time. If your pup has life inside, let your pup live with that life!!
We didn't have a vacation planned. If you don't think your aunt and uncle are good caretakers, then find someone else. The dog shouldn't have to pay for your family members' irresponsibility.

I love my dog intensely and I would put her down if she was terminally or chronically ill and there was nothing that the vet could do to cure her or alleviate her suffering. I wouldn't do it just because I was leaving the country for a few weeks. What the heck kind of reason is that to euthanize a pet? I'm sorry, but I think that's a tad messed up and I really just don't get it.

You really do just know when the time is right huh.

My boyfriend's mum is in a similar situation right now actually. Her beautiful golden retriever is only 8 years old, so he should technically have 4-6 more years to go. But he's just been diagnosed with osteosarcoma so he's got about a week to live :( Currently he's in quite a bit of pain (despite the tramadol he's on) and can't get around much, but he's still reasonably bright and happy.
My boyfriend's mum is naturally dreading making "the call" to go and have him put to sleep, because she's so worried that what if he's just had a bad day and he'll be better the next day etc. But I told her that she will just know when the time is right.

So heartbreaking :(

Couple new pics...I need a real camera

This thread is so teasing; I'd love to get fish again but I'm going to uni in September and I don't think it's fair to ask someone else to look after them. I used to have a cute little tank with a load of neons and other tropical fish in that I adored.

A friend of mine recently set up a tank with a Senegal Birchir, along with a few other fish. The Birchir is amazing, it gulps air from the top of the tank and, as my friend set up a small out-of-water area, it will occasionally sit, half out of the water, for quite a long time.

man those are some nice pictures. i wann try to post some also... thanks for letting me see some of them

I'd love to see some pics of your tank :)

If you dont have pics, can you at least tell me about it?
Size, gear specifications, stocking list, etc?

:D

I love animals in general. But my nickname is Kitty for a reason. :)

Cats are also just much easier to take care of. I have an automated litter box and a water fountain for my kitties, so I can leave them for almost a week if I would absolutely have to (although I probably wouldn't ever leave them totally alone for that long!).

Once I have a real house with a yard and everything, I would at least consider a dog. Like if I had an s/o or kids that wanted a dog, I would get one for sure. :)

I love both, but gotta go with cats.

My Bengal kitty is really affectionate and playful and easy to care for - now that she goes outside, I don't even have to worry about the litter box. :)

Cats are lovely creatures but as far as companionship I love dogs. Maybe its that I have never gotten to really know a cat but they just seem so uninterested and haughty while a dog is that loyal friend who just happens to slobber a bit too much.

I like loads of dogs.
The only cat breed I like that I have come across so far is the Maine Coon.
Overall, dogs are way cooler than cats.

One of our cats is a Maine Coon mix.
He is better than our dog.

This is our latest addition. Rescued from the dump.
