The Big Question - Cat v's Dog

Just adopted a little doggy with an abusive last owner.

my family and I adopted an extremely cute little bichon frise pure bred dog, he's white, his nails are really long, has one tooth (info says the owned pried his teeth out)
both of his eyes has cataracts, one worse than the other, has an infected ear and his ribs are sticking out.
Regardless of these imperfections, this little guy is the cutest little thing I've ever seen. He loves attention and loves it when I lay down next to him and pet him. I just gave him a bath and spent some time with him to make sure he knows that this isn't going to be like before and no one will hurt him. I want him to realize that I'm here to love him and care for him.
He walks really slowly and cannot walk up stairs or jump onto beds. I was told that he is 6 years old.
I didn't know where to post this topic because the lounge is locked, but this is definitely related to healthy living.
I'm so glad the little guy likes our home and I know that my family and I will do everything to love him and pay attention to him regularly.

My one question to you guys is..

How can someone harm an innocent little creature like this. I consider myself definitely right leaning politically, but I would do ANYTHING to help little animals like this that have been mistreated (and no, I would never donate to PETA so they can use my money for those stupid commercials and not help with anything)

Why would someone do this? How? why???

Congratulations on the new addition to your family!

Dogs, in my experience with both purebreds and rescues, crave your love and companionship. The obvious needs for food, water, medicine... seems like you have bonded with your new friend. You're already doing your part by being a responsible dog owner. Your dog should probably get a checkup from the vet to make sure he is healthy, and if he's having issues getting around, the vet is the best person to handle that. It is likely that as long as his ear is cleaned out to avoid infection, he will be around for many more years of happiness. Being his best friend will ensure that. Dogs, like people, have individual personalities and quirks.

a kid wanted to find out how to help turtles better cross the road, so he set a rubber turtle in the yellow divider of the road and watched as atleast one car every hour swerved out of its way to purposely run the thing over

bottom line is people enjoy exerting their power over weaker creatures.....and i hate them

They are not guilty it is their genes, sir.

To the Op; did you name it yet? Perhaps give it a name which is a reference to the cruelty so you can rub it all over people's faces : IE
you:
grievous bodily harm , here boy!
Kid: why is your dog called like that yet so fluffy and cute?
you explain what happened to the dog.
Kid throws up and never harms another animal unneccesarily in his life

^ Genes might dictate a persons disposition to a certain extent, but by no means do I agree that this forces them, or gives them any excuse to act in a violent harmful matter. If they have these traits they shouldn't have animals in the first place, but then again, things seldom go as they should in the real world.

@ OP: Glad to hear he has a nice new owner, and keep us posted on how he's doing, while I am more of a cat person, I love most animals, and find anyone that would intentionally hurt them to be foul human beings.

Thanks for the replies you guys. The dog already had a name, "Casper," (we call him Caspi) that he already responds to so we decided not to change the name.
He was whimpering for a while, and still does occasionally, but I determined that it is because he wants attention rather than being in pain of some sort.
He's starting to get really comfortable, but I'm very nervous about the cataracts in his eyes. Goddamn dog has so many problems, taking him to the vet tomorrow, I'll keep you guys posted! Thanks again

People suck. Seriously. I volunteer at an animal shelter and they pick up pets people abuse, don't want, or leave behind all the time. Like something that's lived inside and been fed by people it's entire life is really going to do well when you decide you can't be bothered taking it with you, so you "set it free." Or, you're moving and don't want this anymore? I'm sure putting your pet in a cage and removing it from everything it knows will totally not have an impact on it, have fun moving. The abuse cases piss me off the most. It's not just an animal, it's completely innocent and trusts you, so don't be a dick to it.

You're a hero for adopting though, no matter how badly that poor dog was treated before, you've made it's life a million times better.

I missed this first time around. I'm curious what he can eat with no teeth, just can food or what did the vet think?
My retriever-mix has cataracts too, happens as they age but she has no significant health problems (knock-wood)
I adopted her in 2002 and she still gets around fine. <3 Give us an update!

Many kudos to you for adopting a rescue!! It's such a wonderful feeling to give an animal the life it deserves. I don't know how snyone can abuse an animal. It makes me so sick to think about it.

I have adopted two rescue dogs this year. The first was a puppy when I got her at the end of April and I just got my second dog ( who is estimated to be about two) right before Christmas. My house feels like a zoo sometimes but adopting them has been so satifying. I also love the fact that thry go wild when I come home from work lol I always ask my boyfriend "why can't you greet me like that?" lol

Bless you OP for giving a needy dog a good home. Although I like cats, I absolutely adore dogs and get really upset when I hear about or see cruelty to them. How could anyone pull a dog's teeth out?

Anyway, enjoy getting to know the new family member (because that's what they are). Whatever love you give them you'll get back 10x.

The dogs with no teeth at the shelter eat wet food, sometimes a little watered down if they're still having difficulty. Cats are the same, although they can still eat a little dry food, as they tend not to chew as much.

I currently have a 7 month old kitten called Biscuit. She was spayed 10 days ago and has developed a worrying looking lump below her stitches (the fleshy part of skin which joins her leg to her stomach). It's been really difficult trying to prevent her from climbing and jumping everywhere these last few weeks since every room in my flat has some tempting obstacle for her to explore, and I have a feeling she's ripped her stitches inside and something's popping out. I'm way too squeamish for that type of thing these days, so I don't really wanna think about anymore. I'm taking her to the vet in a few hours as the worry is killing me. She's acting normal, is eating and drinking, no redness or inflamed skin around the stitches, no pus, and her poop is fine too. But better safe than sorry.

This pic was taken a day after her surgery. I'll report back. Fingers crossed for lil' Biscuit.

Thank you guys. :)

I've just got back from the vets now and thankfully it was only an abscess. They drained it, gave her a few vaccines, and she was as good as new. Apart from that minor problem, she appears to be healing well. She's currently enjoying some tuna so she must be OK. :)

So very glad to hear everything is alright. My heart was literally pounding til I scrolled down to this last post.

For real, I think I like cats more than people. <3

Keep us posted on recovery, and all other cute kitty things.
