Medicinal users - How do you cope with tolerance?

Hrm, i've never even thought about medicinal marijuana tolerance.....
but now that you've mentioned it...i'm very curious also.

maybe the reverse tolerance comes into play in some cases... that would be cool.

i dont think doctors intended patients to get completely blazed in the first place lol, in which case tolerance wouldnt be an issue.

This thread makes me want to smoke.

Anyway... are there any medicinal users on this board? I'm really curious and I wanna read about this.

What makes you think of that? You basically build up a tolerance to anything no matter what the amount. You need more to get the same effects, even if you're smoking or eating as much as 10 mg of THC, after a while you'll need 15, then 20, then 30 mg, etc..

I'm somewhat a medicinal user.. I use it to treat migraines, works wonders. I don't have them chronically, but whenever I run out of weed I do get a (mild) migraine for a couple of hours/days, stopping is rather painful for me in the beginning.

But people with chronic pain/disease, like back pain or arthritis, how do you deal with tolerance?

well marijuana still affects you quite a bit when you have a tolerance, you just don't get very high. since the medical patients are using it for affects other than the high its probably not as big of a problem for them. it may even be a good thing because they probably find it easier to function in their daily lives when they have a tolerance than when they are getting completely baked.

I don't know about that.. I think that after a while you'll build up a tolerance to nearly all of the effects, but I'm not exactly sure about that.

Phantom limb pain

I use cannabis to control phantom limb pain, which when it occurs, is like nothing you've ever experienced (getting pain from a part of your body that no longer exists - it can be agonizing). If I'm experiencing an extended bout (normally it only last for a day), and I've got a fair bit to use, I just start eating it as well; with limited supplies, I generally suppliment it with a benzo (valium - but any will do), which is the best thing the doc can prescribe at the moment (roll on medical cannabisin the UK), but it means spending time in an almost comatose state - it's still better than the pain though

you would probably get more replies on overgrow.com. they have a section specificly for medical marijuana to so ya. i just took a bunch of mythlphenidate and my minds racing.. so sorry if this is un needed or anything.

What kind of migranes do you get? Do you have auras when you have them? Because I get random migranes sometimes. They'll start as auras, then I'll get a migrane, then I'll feel sick. I'm taking a barbituatis based medication, and now you mention it, maybe marijuana would be good for them.

I've sought medical treatment for migraines for years... Been on every prevenative possible and they don't like to prescribe real meds for 'just headaches', even a headache specialist neurologist. My combo to kill a migraine is a drug called Midrin and a couple bowls. Only problem is if you aren't willing to redose and smoke more in a couple hours it'll come back strong...

Yeah, I sometimes get the auras.. Most of the times they are weird black spots though. :)

But yeah, you should inform your doc about it.. I would rather have some marijuana prescribed instead of barbiturates, but that's me. I'll just quote a bit from a page (that I now see links to medicinal marijuana resource sites):
Cannabis contains a variety of cannabinoids that act synergistically to help relieve migraine symptoms. Cannabis is both anti-inflammatory and analgesic in addition to its known anti-emetic properties. Recent research demonstrates that cannabis is also a mild vasodilator that can lower blood pressure. Cannabis can provide relief from muscle cramps that can accompany migraine (particularly of the neck and shoulders). Patients whose headaches may be anxiety related need to be cautious about cannabis as it can aggravate symptoms of anxiety in some patients

im somewhat of a self-perscribed medical smoker as well... i used to get migrains for weeks at a time (once i had the same headache for a month and a half) and not sleep for sometimes up to 2 weeks at a time, usually just 3 or so days (no drugs involved) before i started smokin herb, and then for a while it would happen again if i didnt have any herb... hasnt happened like that in a while, after i started smokin mad amounts at a time all the time... the only thing that still exists is the whole sleep thing, which i cant knock myself out with 4 tylenol pms .... i gotta say it is a hell of a lot harder to get stoned 6 or 7 years later than it was when i started, even if i do quit for a period of time.... id imagine it would be something similar for a legally perscribed person

i smoke the same amount every day and get about the same level of stonedness... i imagine the same thing happens with medical users
