I was recently prescribed a low dose of Citalopram, an SSRI, and the instructions were to take half of a 10mg tablet every day for three days, and a full 10mg every day after. I took 5mg last night and tonight before it occurred to me: MDMA and Citalopram both work in the same way, so they might have a cross-tolerance. I looked it up on Erowid, and sure enough, it is not possible to roll while one is taking an SSRI, or for some time afterward, until the brain returns to its normal "unmedicated" state. I want to roll on Halloween. My question is: if i do not take any more of this medication, will I be able to roll like normal in about 2 1/2 weeks? I don't want to waste my money...

Hi and welcome to BlueLight.

You're right about the fact that most users who take an SSRI report not being able to roll, but some do. To be honest, chances are you wont feel much effect from the MDMA. Perhaps a few dopamine related effects but not the usual feeling at all.

Skipping doses of your medication is the worst idea in the world. Those medications often have bad withdrawal consequences and must be tapered off with the supervision of your health specialist. Plus this is no guarantee at all that you will be able to roll. It might take months after you cessed the medication for you to roll again.

Consider other options, or take the pills anyway. But don't expect much and certainly dont stop your medication for the sake of a buzz!

Well, the only reason I would stop is that I have only been taking it for two days, at a dose which is 1/4 the normal starting dose, and I haven't felt any effects from the medication yet...

Did you think about the fact that you need this medication for a reason, to stabilize your serotonergic system that is. Taking a drug that will mess it up might not be the best idea ever...

Anyway, i'm just stating the facts so you are informed but ultimately the decision is yours.

Please note, I am not a doctor, so my opinion is pretty much worthless, but...

I would say, if you are really at the very beginning of your treatment, I don't think it would be as big of a deal, if you stop it right now. According to a few websites, Celexa has half-life 35 hours; 90% eliminated in 7.3 days. So yeah, stopping it the sooner, the better.

I say this, because it sounds like you've already made up your mind, and I would think the discontinuation symptoms should be minimal if done soon. But you might be one of those special cases that can get really bad withdrawal--you never know. I don't know if rolling would be as intense, though... someone more knowledgeable on neuro-chemistry will have to chime in.

Remember, it can take several weeks for antidepressants to start working, so don't give up hope on this medication if you have only given it two days.
