Math Test In Oxon Hill Used Drug References
By Nancy Trejos, Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, September 30, 2004; Page B03

A 10th-grade geometry teacher at Oxon Hill High School has been reassigned after he gave students an exam that used references to drugs and weapons in word problems.

The teacher, whose name was not disclosed by the Prince George's County school system, has been given an office job that does not involve contact with students while officials investigate the incident. In a letter sent home with students yesterday, the high school's principal, Ronald Curtis, explained that the teacher "inadvertently" distributed an "e-mail 'joke' math examination."

Officials did not say when the exam was given, but several students and a parent said it was during the first week of school this year. The incident was first reported by WRC-TV (Channel 4).

The questions, which the teacher found on the Internet, included: "Jose has 2 ounces of cocaine. If he sells an 8 ball to Antonio for $320 and 2 grams to Juan for $85 per gram, what is the street value of the rest of his hold?" Another example: "Wille gets $200 for a stolen BMW, $150 for stealing a Corvette, and $100 for a 4X4. If he steals 1 BMW, 2 Corvettes, and 3 4X4's, how many more Corvettes must he steal to have $900?"

At the top of the test, students were asked to write their name as well as their "gang name."

In his letter to parents, Curtis, the principal, said the teacher immediately collected the test from students but was not able to retrieve all of them.

However, Jennifer McNeill, an Oxon Hill resident, said that her 15-year-old daughter took the test and that the teacher returned the test to students earlier this week and reviewed the answers with them. "I was flabbergasted. I was outraged," McNeill said. "I was in shock. Mad, angry. I felt betrayed."

School officials said in a statement yesterday that the teacher had an excellent professional reputation and had no record of previous allegations of misconduct.

Several students defended the teacher yesterday, carrying signs supporting him as classes ended for the day and arguing that he was simply trying to relate to them. "It was just a joke," said Delonte Budd, 15. "It didn't offend. He's a good teacher."

June White Dillard, president of the Prince George's chapter of the NAACP, said the school system should give the teacher a more serious punishment. "We can't have these negative stereotypes going on," she said. "It was extremely poor judgment. We want this to be lesson to all of the teachers."

320 for an 8 ball???????? 85 for a gram???????
Thats MAD expensive coke..... teacher should get his facts checked

and BTW it was just a JOKE people, chill out, take a chill-pill....
its not like he gave it to preschoolers these kids were 15-16 years old...

it was a JOKE, i'm sure the teacher didin't seriously expect anyone to answer the question's, altho i'm sure a few of them knew the answer's anyway....

I'm sure it was just another math teacher desperate to find a way to get his students somewhat interested in the material.

I wish I had test's like that in highschool. Maybe I would have passed math !

You can't be serious.. These questions are asked in an exam..? Damn, 8 year olds can answer it, this can't be a question for 15 year old kids, it's just too easy.

How would the kids know how much an eightball is? Or even how many grams are in two ounces...

Yea I can see some kids not knowing what an 8ball is but they should know how many grams go into an ounce and otherwise be familiar with metric measurements. Unless this is some school where the metric system is not taught.

^^ Since I've never really used imperial units (for mass, anyway...), I have to think very long and hard to remember how many grams to an ounce... It just depends on the system/s you use all the time.

Besides, imperial units are outdated... and they're useless scientifically! Just get rid of 'em!!

someone shut that bitch up with a knife, jesus

no kidding

I had a physics teacher in High School that had test questions like "your teacher kills the most overweight student, who weighs 300 pounds...he drags him 16 meters or whatever..." and nobody cared.

Anyone else remember when something almost identical to this happened about a year ago? The examples weren't quite as extreme as these (Most kids probably don't even know how much an 8-ball is), but another teacher was fired for doing the exact same thing

There was a question in a high school physics TEXT BOOK that is COMMONLY used (one of my friends had it) where you measure the velocity of sound wave as it echoes off the floor of the pit of hell. (Jim is falling into the pit of hell at 30 m/s with constant acceleration. As he passes the devil he lets out a scream towards the floor. How long does it take for the Devil to hear the echo of his scream.... etc etc etc.) There were like 6 parts to it. It was fucking hilarious! :D

Oddly enough, the teacher in question taught a good deal of my friend's math, and they each found it hilarious - he's a guy in pretty good humour, and it's really not particularly the best area in general ... the residents are really self-aware as to how ghetto is particularly can be, and there's a hilarious amuont of self-mockery as a result.

... well, we found it funny, anyway.

in all honesty, if it wernt for my interest in drugs, I would barely know the metric system. As it is now, I can rattle off any metric conversions, and even metric-imperial conversions off the top of my head :D
