Mass Shooting and Gun Control Megathread

Old one, but this shit happens to white people all the time, I think statistically it actually happens to white people more often, since there more of us, either way this shit is unacceptable reguardless of race , race isn’t the real issue, shit cops is the issue

He got fired. I assume he'll catch a civil suit. The teen ended up in the hospital in critical condition but has survived. Obviously the kid will file a suit against the city/police I'd think

It's insane that cops can just get fired and not face criminal charges for shit like that. What the fuck. Crazy psychopath schoolyard bullies see a path to be able to shoot people and escape real consequences... then they do it. And the plans works great...

Not only that, they often get fired just to pop up in another department elsewhere. Fucking weasels

I don't want to argue about this and understand America has a "gun culture" we don't have, so it's more complex, but just saw this and wanted to put it out there.

I've seen a video made by Americans about our "police state" and what happened here during the pandemic which was quite interesting and accurate -- Melbourne was declared the most locked-down city in the world by the end of the second year..

But it went on to say that it was related to our strict gun laws and that guns had been taken from us unfairly. Both those ideas are untrue.

For the record, I think what has been happening in Shanghai and other parts of China is prolly worse than anything that's happened in Oz.

Oh for sure. It was a big deal for us though because Melbourne has been voted Most Liveable City in the world many times. Then we were like prisoners during the pandemic (Sydney was similar).

I didn't mind it because I live like a hermit anyway and it was nice and quiet when I did go out. Though we had a curfew at times from 8pm-5am. Lots of people went completely crazy though.

Ban on guns with serial numbers removed is unconstitutional -U.S. judge

In case you're wondering, I read on reddit today that some Texas school districts sent kids home with DNA kits so parents could identify them should they be massacred

Seems the Texas GOP will do ANYTHING but make common sense gun reform. They'd rather wait until the kids are already dead instead of working to prevent the deaths in the first place. smfh

Texas no longer requires a license to carry a gun

A new law allowing people to carry handguns without a license has led to more spontaneous shootings, many in law enforcement say.

I can't view article without creating an account.

I live in TX and AFAIK this is not new. I think what they call constitutional carry was passed a year ago, maybe longer. @Cream Gravy? prolly knows better than me.

Yeah it was last year. It really didn't change anything. Kansas and several other states already had constitutional carry for handguns LONG before Texas did, I think Kansas passed theirs in the 90s? Either way, Texas is late to the 'constitutional carry' game. It hasn't had any impact on anything, it was just Greg Abbot virtue signaling. Everyone I know who carries already had a permit so nothing changed for most people. It's a shall issue state, unless you're a confirmed wife beater or a felon you can get a permit.

Didn't read the article, not gonna make an account. But if the NY Times are talking about firearms, I'm guessing they're just spewing propaganda and lies. The little soon to be gone loopholes NY itself is putting up around carry laws are so petty and pointless and I'll be happy to see them overturned.

If people wanna live in a land without guns, just move north to Canada. It ain't far and Trudeau is making sure there won't be firearms in the hands of ANY law abiding citizens. I'd watch out for the non-law-abiders though. They might have weaponry still because they don't care about laws.

Iowa voted in a referendum to enshrine the right to bear arms in their state constitution in the midterm. Congrats Iowa!

Oregon voted in a referendum to essentially outlaw almost all firearms in what is now the most restrictive state legislation in the union, by a barely 50% margin. $3 million invested against rights, only $175k invested for their rights (campaign funding). A Microsoft ex-CEO wife paid for at least $750k of that. Sorry for Oregoneons today. Y’all are gonna have an uphill battle to reclaim your rights ❤️

They never will…it will just spread across the country , like MMJ

Maybe so. I saw that twelve 2A infringing laws were pre-filed for the 2023 legislative session in Texas. While none will pass, the fact that they’re being filed at all is irksome and rather concerning as a red blooded American and Texan. Some go so far as to basically ban semi-auto weapons.

I don’t know how firearm rights became a Red vs Blue issue. I used to be very Democrat leaning and voted Blue every year until this year. When the Dems turned their backs on us firearm owners I couldn’t stand by and watch any longer. I just couldn’t. If we tried to force everyone to give up booze or weed or babies tomorrow I’m sure they’d feel as impassioned as I do.

So I really don’t get it. I would blame the youth but us Millennials aren’t turning tail and handing over our firearms. Gen Z… I guess they grew up with the internet telling them “gunz are bad 4 u” and there have been horrific events either staged by the government or randomly perpetrated that would sway any young voter… they also don’t support our military though.

It’s like the media is telling young people to hate America but not giving them reasons, not real ones. And because people are easily influenced when young I guess they’re buying it.

I love America. It would be a cold day in Hell before I’d give up my rights as a human, an individual. No one will tell my wife to have or not have a baby. No one will tell us to take or not take drugs. To own or not own firearms. Like Jesus man… How can people not want freedom?

The Republicans are trying to tell her to have a baby, if she gets pregnant.

I would honestly be shocked if Democrats took guns away from any law-abiding citizens. Republicans have been screaming about that for decades, it's one of the main ways they get people to vote for them. If they did, I would find that very problematic. I just don't see it happening.

I mean I know how a certain segment of the right feels on abortion, I’m not like “rah rah lets go Evangelicalism” by any means. Far from it.

Even if there were no confiscations or “buybacks”, bans in and of themselves affect everyone. They’re unconstitutional and horrifically tyrannical. Just like the drug war. Just like abortion and reproductive restrictions. So many firearm restrictions have already passed under both blue and red administrations, it sickens me. Let’s not forget it was Reagan’s heyday when the nail in the coffin was proverbially nailed, with the unconstitutional 1986 select fire ban.

I just… I just don’t know how people can think one freedom is okay and another isn’t is all. Doesn’t everyone in America want freedom, complete freedom? If we can’t have it here in the U.S. of A., then where can we have it? If anyone in America doesn’t want freedom, they can head down to Mexico or up to Canada and get the hell out of the land off the free.

I know what I’m saying sounds hyperbolically patriotic and maybe even xenophobic but I’m feeling impassioned and I’m trying to get a point across. I voted Red this year. Maybe I’ll vote Blue next year if none of the candidates are for bans of any sort. Or maybe I’ll vote Libertarian, but as strong as the Libertarians are in Texas we still don’t make up more than 1% of the vote on average.

I guess I feel it’s easier to do abortion and drugs on the down low than it is to own and utilize an illicit firearm. If I slapped a stock on my AR-pistol and didn’t tell the ATF and then I took it to a range to shoot it, I could end up with felony charges… just for sticking a piece of plastic on an inanimate object.

I’m not a gangster. I don’t like breaking the law and I don’t like having to do it publicly. It’s damned hard to afford enough land to shoot on in privacy. I think here in Texas it has to be at least ten acres and outside city limits. Quite a chunk of land. Even in the middle of nowhere you’re looking at $8-10k per acre. So $100k to shoot privately if you want to own illicit firearms… a lot more money than to do drugs in your living room or drive your woman to a state border for an abortion.
