Mass Shooting and Gun Control Megathread

Sounds like the dad is an abusive deadbeat.
“My mom tells me he probably would have shot me too, because he would always say I didn’t love him,” he told The Daily Beast.

Yeah, when you're own mother [the grandmother who was shot] says your child would have killed you, I think that says a lot...

That can't have been a good translation, it doesn't even really make sense. What does be closer to the children mean? 😖

And this part:
the father has a lengthy criminal record which includes at least one conviction for assault and causing bodily injury to a family member. He said he was currently estranged from his daughter—the gunman’s sister

Small town cops don't wake up everyday expecting to put their life on the line. You can take whatever oath you want, when the bullets start flying it's a different story. These people have kids of their own who need them. Would you run blindly into a situation like that and risk never seeing your family again?

i get what you are saying mal but, if not cops, then who?

if the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. the only thing. and that good guy with a gun has been trained to deal with bad guys - and has freely taken an oath to protect and serve - but he's not the guy to deal with a situation like this in case he might get hurt or killed, then who?

facts appear to still be emerging about the uvalde police department's so i don't really want to assume. but it's concerning that the 'facts' already appear to be changing.

i've read that uvalde sd has a population of 15k and spends 40% of its budget on police (i can't find the original source for this figure but it's now widely reported). that covers a 7 person force and a 9 person swat team. from that link:

"The Uvalde Police Dept. S.W.A.T. will be visiting the Uvalde CISD schools, Uvalde Classical Academy, and local businesses throughout the day. The purpose of the visits is to familiarize themselves with layouts of our local schools and businesses. S.W.A.T members will be in full tactical uniforms and we did not want the public to be alarmed when seen. We appreciate the cooperations of all schools and businesses involved. We will continue working together to make Uvalde the safest place to live."

i'm not blaming this all on the cops - and i think 'acab' is moronic - but lots of hard questions to be answered here...

lapierre's famous phrase is effectively republican party dogma and accepted as gospel. i'm wondering whether armed police - and civilians - have any effect whatsoever when it comes to these mass shootings.

I hope there is some real, reasonable change in this country; raise the purchase age, require background checks even for private sales, fund programs that help unhappy youths... there are so many answers that aren't just a knee jerk "BAN, BAN, BAN!" type reaction.
I agree but that's not what most conservatives would have you believe. They immediately fall into the "slippery slope" hypotheticals and automatically say that any type of increased background checks, registration, or anything really, is a slippery slope to gov't confiscation aka BAN BAN BAN. Evidence-free fearmongering meant to increase gun sales.

In risk management there is a term called the Swiss Cheese method.

Singular defense layers always have holes that can be exploited. But when you stack many thin layers of defenses, those holes start to disappear and become increasingly difficult to navigate.

This situation requires those many small but notable changes.

So yeah, one or two small changes isn't going to work, but the argument that they aren't effective at all is moot.

yes, I agree. There needs to be accountability.

It's sickening though, to see a bunch of keyboard warriors - the same ones who have been shitting on cops for at least the past two years - suddenly pretending as though their job holds some kind of mystical prestige...

I mean, a few days ago they were racist tyrants who need to be defunded immediately, then they became sacred protectors of children?

I guess now they're back to racist tyrants again, only now they're cowards and child murderers as well.

I wonder, if they had allowed the parents to run in to the school where an active shooter was on a killing spree, and the parents ended up dying as well... what would the media have to say about that. 🤔

Perhaps it's not the person buying the guns that requires background checks, it's their fuckin family...

I had no idea the NRA had such a large building... Why? It's almost like large amounts of money are involved.

I hear that Trump has spoken out in opposition to gun control. Again.

If he had to actually face someone with a gun he'd wet his nappy.

Cunt.

"What's that? A gun? That's a terrific gun. The best gun I've ever seen. America makes the best guns. Best guns you've ever seen, it's great.

You know what? I'll buy it off you. Name any price. I make the best deals. I'll buy all the guns. I'm worth a lot of mo--"

BANG!!!!!

The modern liberal isn’t able to see this, all they know Is what the TV and Twitter says, it’s the marching orders they blindly follow. Blaming societal rot on guns is certainly easier than addressing the root cause. The fact that rifles kill less people than most house hold items doesnt matter when emotion is involved.

Right... like an intruder breaking into your home. Or a deer.

I'd be fine with banning everything other than handguns and hunting rifles. And increase funding for mental health services. Free universal trade schools and community colleges.

Thats never gonna happen though. Because conservatives don't want to and liberals don't have the balls to push for it. Instead they will just pretend like stronger background checks, closing loopholes and dumb shit like that is going to make a difference. Then they'll lose and move on when they can.
I'm a gun owning conservative and support back ground checks/training .... really all of the above but what you people don't understand is the left always takes it too far leaving the door open for more restrictions. Guns will NEVER go away. We need to focus on the killer, not the weapon. Our youth are under attack and their mental health is suffering. I don't have all the answers but I hope we can find a way help them. Also feel it is sooooo sad when a tragedy like this happens and all the anti-gun people use it to advance their agenda. Even obama comparing it to George Floyd ... what a complete idiot. If we could all come together and attack the mental health issues our youth are facing, maybe we canget somewhere.
