Marijuana potency surpasses 10 percent, U.S. says

* Story Highlights
* Average potency of marijuana passes 10 percent, gov't officials say
* Officials warn marijuana's rise in potency poses serious risk to youth drug users
* Scientists fear marijuana potency could reach 15 percent in next 10 years

OXFORD, Mississippi (CNN) -- The average potency of marijuana, which has risen steadily for three decades, has exceeded 10 percent for the first time, the U.S. government will report on Thursday.

Scientists working for the government predict that potency, as measured by the drug's concentration of the psychoactive ingredient THC, will continue to rise.

At the University of Mississippi's Potency Monitoring Project, where thousands of samples of seized marijuana are tested every year, project director Mahmoud ElSohly said some samples have THC levels exceeding 30 percent.

Average THC concentrations will continue to climb before leveling off at 15 percent or 16 percent in five to 10 years, ElSohly predicted.

The stronger marijuana is of particular concern because high concentrations of THC have the opposite effect of low concentrations, officials say.

In addition, while experienced marijuana users may limit their intake of potent marijuana, young and inexperienced users may not moderate their intake and possibly suffer from dysphoria, paranoia, irritability and other negative effects. VideoWatch more on the increase in marijuana potency »

Potent marijuana also poses significant risk to the developing adolescent brain, said Edward Jurith, acting director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy.

Increasing potency is leading to higher admissions to emergency rooms and drug treatment programs, officials say.

The average THC for tested marijuana during 2008 was 10.1 percent, according to the government, compared to 1983 when it was reportedly under 4 percent.

Even drugs seized at the United States' southwest border are showing increasing potency, the Office of National Drug Control Policy says. The median potency increased from 4.8 percent in 2003 to 7.3 percent in 2007. Marijuana from Mexico and other southern sources traditionally had lower THC content than other sources'.

"The children I'm most worried about are children who are heavy users ... people who use it on a daily basis," said Dr. Lawrence Brain, a child psychiatrist in Maryland.

Lloyd D. Johnston, a University of Michigan professor who has spent 35 years studying youth drug use, said youth marijuana use has fluctuated dramatically over that period.

"One of the driving forces of that ... is the degree to which young people think that marijuana is dangerous," he said. "Perceived risk has usually been a leading indicator of changes."

News about potency is not likely to change adolescents' behavior, Brain said.

"I'm not advocating the use of marijuana at all," he said. "But in some ways, it is out there. ... Telling them it's 10 percent -- three times more potent than what their parents smoked -- is not an argument they are likely to buy into or to even utilize in any constructive sort of way.

"I think they do what they do today. I don't think they consider or reflect on what it might have been like 30 years ago."

This might not be a popular view, but I really don't like that Weed's getting this strong.
For one, it's unnecessary. Also as people breed the plants to include more THC, the levels of CBD (Cannabidiol) decrease. CBD is responsible for the Antipsychotic effects of Weed, which counteract the Psychotic properties of THC enough for it to be much less likely that people will be dealt the Psychosis card.
But I guess it's the story of modern society - more more more more more...

I'm saying that the assertion that street cannabis is on average 10x stronger than it was 40 years ago or whenever is a myth.

Even if it were true, the human body's receptors that bind THC can only get saturated up to a certain point beyond which adding more THC molecules will not get you any higher.

The moral of this story is that your parents or teachers or elected government officials or whoever got just as high in the 1960s or 70s or whenever if they smoked pot then as would anyone who likely tried smoking it today.

There have always been high grade and low grade potencies of cannabis available. Besides potency, stickiness of buds, and pungency of smell, one of their most steadfast differences is their price per weight: the strong stuff costs more.

^^ I think that the potency has indeed increased. Selective breeding, removal of male plants, and advances in hydro, lights etc.

I do think our parents got just as high, but they had to smoke more.

...so I guess marijuana smokers will have less tar in their lungs? In the past ten years a lot of states have also legalized medical marijuana.

Exactly, you are still getting 2 mg of THC, 5 mg for heavy users. The baby boomers just had to smoke much more plant material to deliver the same amount that can be smoked with just a bowl.

So in that respect the article is correct that if someone usually gets 1-2 mg of THC and smoked a much higher potency and got 5 mg, then they are going to not have fun. But I find it hard to believe they cannot tell the difference between mids. and dank. :\

Wow, that is an awesome quote, I am going to use that sometime.

Uh oh.. is this bad because selective breeding kinda proves evolution, or because we will have to ingest less burning plant material per 'dose'? =p

hahah what trash are they smoking? *gasp* 10%? Who the fuck cares, get a life "Jeanne Meserve and Mike M. Ahlers

seriously go write an article on how dangerous it was when parents of the 60s would make there kids smoke a full pack to "learn a lesson". If somethings more potent you need less to get to where your going, you dont smoke 2Gs of keif because you can smoke 2g's of swagg? Its like drinking a 40oz of vodka because you can handle a colt 45 & rarely n00bs do that which due to disinformation spawned by prohibition. That would easily be prevented by informing the public if legalization would ever occur.

p.s.

Thats Riiight Biotch! Although there is a chance this article increased it =0

This is a nonsensical quote, rather, not a great one. Seriously, this guy is an idiot.

For those thousands of years they didn't even know about genes, or DNA or selective breeding. For christ sakes, crop rotation wasn't practiced.

How the fuck could they have known to remove males? They didn't know how plant reproduction worked for fucks sake.
