Yesterday on my birthday I had a brutal migrane.

I get around 2-3 a year. I have known triggers, Caffeine, exhaustion, and physical exertion. The migrane becomes more likely when all three are combined. When they starts, I get spots in my vision that appear like im looking through water. Exactly one hour after I start vomiting every 15 minutes as the throbbing pain is close to unbearable. This last for about 6 hours and then dissipates.

For some reason, one which I have yet to figure out, I get migraines when I go skiing. They set in only after I get off the slopes, this is what happened yesterday. Anyway, I was thinking about why I get them sometimes when i hit the mountain and other times I'm fine. It made me realize that every time I smoke I don't get I migrane. Come to think of it, I can't remember every being high and coming down with one.

Does marijuana help prevent migraines?

It is widely accepted that the pain relieving effects of cannabis can help with headaches, including migraines. I have been getting migraines my whole life, a bit more frequently than you, about one or two a month. Cannabis, especially sativa strains work quite well at relieving my pain as well as the related nausea. I have tried almost every rx out there and none work any where close to how well cannabis does.

It does not take the pain 100% away for me, but it makes me care a lot less about the pain.

Take a look at the plant Feverfew. It has pale green/yellowish leaves with cute daisy-like flowers. Despite its name it is known for helping with headaches. One leaf from the plant in a tea cup and some boiling water. That's all it takes. Does not taste bad either. But it also is not something to take daily for years and years. Just when it is needed.

I suffer from migraines. I also am a pain patient and very involved in the medical marijuana community. Cannabis definitely helps with my migraines in many ways. I suggest you try it next time you feel your first symptoms coming on. I find if I medicate right as I feel or notice the first symptoms, I may be able to stop the headache from turning into a migraine.

I would be interested in responses; for me cannabis is good for muscular pain but often bad for headaches; I've never been very tempted during anything strong enought to call a migraine

It helps migraines a lot. Pain of almost any kind, IME.

Also, the skiing thing. Have you considered the eye strain of actively scanning and looking at the snow and possibly also the white clouds/sky? Significant eye strain is caused by reflection of light from white things.

The funny thing is it will help with the migraine, but it also causes migraines sometimes when you are coming down. Just a general feeling of , fuzziness and cloudy in the head. So if i were you id smoke a fairly small amount, because once you come down you will start feeling kinda cruddy in the head.

Take a Reishi or Shiitake mushroom extract or cook with them instead that is going to be more effective at helping your migraines than smoking herb will be.

I too have heard of a few cases where for some reason coming down off of weed caused a minor migraine. I think it all depends on the person, and possible what kind of weed your smoking. Like I have gotten head aches on nights where my weed wasnt as great so I smoked alot more of it, generally only achieving that sleepy lazy buzz.

To the OP: You said you notice you always get migraine after you go skiing? Well I am personally very sensative to cold weather, and I get head aches easily in the cold. But what I noticed really causes it is when its really cold and windy...the cold ass wind blowing against me ears make them so sensative and gives me a headache very similar to migraines. perhaps its because of the force of cold air on your ears that causes it. And if weed helps you, than awesome! Smoke it!

Yea it usually occurs with me when i'm smoking a fairly good amount and i start coming off, or i'm smoking all day then i wake up the next day with a head ache or just a foggy/groggy feeling. I almost always smoke heavy indicas so that may be the cause, i'm definitely going to try a heavy sativa next time. I just hope it doesn't give me anxiety, as sativas tend to cause anxiety more often.

Interacted with many migraine suffers through MMJ, found it really amazing that a very high percentage, over eighty percent of unrelated migraine sufferers with widely different backgrounds ect, all stated that FLOW buy far worked the best in migraine relief and prevention. personally I take axert, but i get them so infrequently, but the axert dosnt take away the nausea so when the crazy pain dies I asphyxiate the nausea dead w smoke. back to new in twenty minutes.

The cannabinoids in marijuana block pain receptors that cause migraines. These pain-relieving cannabinoids are more prevalent in indica strains

I also use marijuana to help with migraine pain and find it very effective. Much more so than any triptan I've ever been prescribed.

As for the skiing and migraine relationship, I'd just like to point out that, in addition to the very real possibilities of the eyestrain and cold weather being triggers, some people experience migraines with dramatic changes in altitude. Given that skiing is done on mountains often high-altitude areas, this might be something to consider.

Marijuana helps my migraines immensly. I get there anywhere from 1-4 times a month and if I don't smoke weed as soon as I feel one coming on I'll be done for the rest of the day, throwing up and unable to get out of bed.

As stated above, I too benefit greatly off an indica strain to kick a migraine. I get cluster migraines about 1-2 times a year that would get to the level OP was referring to. I'm currently prescribed something for it, but find I get faster and better relief from smoking. If its doing the job, then stick to it :)

Based off personal experience; yes they do help with migraines. But as for a small/mild headache, they only make it WORSE.

I can't say that they help PREVENT migraines as I still get them but I can say that marijuana has helped me to make them subside after they come on...
