Police target annual Mardi Grass festival in northern New South Wales, which aims to promote marijuana law reform. Police detected at least 86 people driving under the influence of drugs during the annual Nimbin Mardi Grass festival and cannabis law reform rally on the weekend. Concurrent police operations in the area around the NSW north coast event included drug detection dogs, a drug bus and high visibility policing, targeting attendees of the pro-marijuana festival.

Inspector Michael Dempsey from the Richmond Local Area Command told Guardian Australia the police run operations targeting the festival every year. Despite expectations of police attention, this year’s 86 detections were a significantly high number, he said. “It’s concerning having that many people under the influence of drugs driving in the one area – in any area,” Dempsey said. “We’d hope that people would not take any drugs and get behind the wheel of a vehicle.”

As well as the 86 drug detections among drivers, police also caught five drunk drivers, issued a “large” number of traffic infringement notices, charged 24 people with drug possession and five with drug supply. A number of other offence charges and cautions were also handed out amid more than 100 searches of individuals and vehicles. Police temporarily suspended the licenses of people detected to be driving under the influence and the test samples were sent to Sydney. Positive results will end in a court appearance for defendants.

lol at some of the comments -

Tried but it sucks big time. Only total losers would want to put that rubbish into their bodies.

.....

As a child I was often driven around by (marijuana) stoned drivers. It was quite scary and they didn't just drive slowly with loud music. They would drift into oncoming lanes, misjudge intersections etc etc... I feel lucky to have survived it all.

Sounds like some bias reporting with a side of propaganda pushin nonsense.

"...to put that rubbish into their bodies." That person probably had more damaging rubbish for dinner than bud. People have no idea what they subject themselves to daily but lets throw herb under the bus. Gimme a break, uneducated twat.

Huhh.. not that i condone driving under the influence.. but since the headline isn't fest ends in hundreds of car accidents I wonder what the point of all this was other than to extort money out of good people and try and make a point that law enforcement is still needed in this capacity. Im not telling anyone to drive stoned.. but I have driven hundreds of thousands of miles/K with weed on board and never had a problem. I have driven a few hundred miles/k with booze on board and have been a danger to others and myself. Apples and oranges is my opinion.

I have no problems with them arresting drug drivers at Mardi Grass. The road in and out of Nimbin is fucking scary enough without drug fucked idiots behind the wheel.

The police turn a blind eye to open drug use for the whole weekend, no one was arrested for rolling spliffs. The organisers even ask that you don't blow smoke in the direction of the police officers, which says a lot for the festival. You would have to be a fucking nob to decide to test it further by driving there and back stoned of carrying drugs. Every year the Qld cops simply set up a road block at the border like taking candy from a baby.

EErrrrmm... I am usually right beside most of DITM with these sorts of things, if people were caught high trying to drive or behind the wheel at all then enjoy our ticket and day in court... you are stupid!

I am actually glad the cops took you asshats off the street and probably still let you keep your bud. I very rarely agree with the actions of police but good on you guys and gals in blue. Ignorant stoners are worse than ignorant sober people.

10,000 + people tho.....

Also I'm pretty sure I read quite a few of the detections for drug driving were for amphetamines.

I think alot of people are just dumb and fucked in the head and don't care about laws and safety, they will drive after too much alcohol, too much weed or after getting high on ice or whatever. These sorts of people should be caught and yes I agree that the cops are doing their jobs.

The amount of busts for a 10,000 plus crowd does not seem very over the top at all. I think that alot of people are probably sensible and go stoned or tripping or whatever but have a straight driver (a designated driver). My friend uploaded lots of pics and vids to their instagram from the event and seeing the bong throwing competition was funny as, some of the people were shit at throwing the orchy... lol
