Marijuana and possible appetite suppression?

Hey everyone, had a question about your hunger while not high.

I've noticed a good portion of really heavy smokers are skinny, maybe that is just around my area, perhaps. I notice when I don't smoke at all during the day, my appetite will be pretty suppressed. When I take 4-5 days off from smoking, I start to get naturally hungry again. I haven't really researched it, but it could possibly make sense that if the person is a heavy smoker, maybe their body eventually adapts and will offset their natural hunger while not high?

With alot of prescription drugs, the brain eventually adapts to the drug over time, and may become reliant on taking it just to get back to square 1 (before they started taking the drug in the first place). Maybe the body eventually tries to compensate for the appetite stimulation (from the weed) by lowering the natural appetite because the person is on a routine of smoking?

Sorry for all of the typing, it's just difficult to explain what I'm trying to say lol. I dunno, just something that I noticed. It would make sense, considering your body adapts to prescription drugs, possibly the same rules would apply to cannabis?

Peace

What I'm basically getting at is, I wonder if the appetite suppression goes further than just psychological. Maybe my body is slightly reliant on needing cannabis to eat?

I'm not sure so don't quote me but I think marijuana speeds up your metabolism causing you to burn calories and get rid of fat faster

^I definitely wouldn't quote you, I don't think that there's any evidence to support that claim.

papaown, I agree that there is a truth in what you say. To what extent and how far reaching across the using population it is I can't be sure but I've observed the same.

I've actually kind of integrated this into my weight loss. Now I've lost weight but I'm still out of shape. :D

I actually lose my appetite, or more to say, i get very hungry but end up eating less/slowly..
pot caan also make you more health concious if you were beforehand, but the best thing I noticed, being high, not completely stoned, while doing any sort of sport really makes you commit to it longer, get tired less and focus a lot more of your energy and doing better...

I experienced this whilst skateboarding.. managed to learn a new trick on a rail I'd been scared of before, and I went on for hours skateboarding.... then the burnout - made me hungry as fuck but I never really ran out of energy

granted thatll happen if you really enjoy the sport... I dont see myself smoking a joint and joining field hockey or something...

i dont think marijuana is going to cause you to feel like your appetite is being suppressed. just about in all cases weed is going to give you the desire to eat, especially on an empty stomach. but heres the thing, its not really that increased appetite is a side effect of marijuana, its more so the incoming toxins your forcing into your body which automatically signals your body to feel hunger. its not a natural hunger feeling, its an urge to eat induced by toxins. eating flushes them and rebalances the body.

i also strongly believe that marijuana does have an action that increases metabolism. people who arent really informed on weed and know about the common idea that it gives you the munchies, figure that smoking alot of weed makes you gain weight because of increased food intake. i do not believe this is true, because for the most part weed keeps your body weight intact and even can contribute to weight loss. not sure exactly how it increases metabolism, but just about every drug does so id figure weed does as well.

same thing happens to me when I'm smoking a lot of high quality stuff, like a gram of skunk a day at the very least. I dont get hungry till I smoke weed enough to get the munchies, then I'm hungry as fuck. Its because weed messes with your brains perception of blood sugar. My theory is that excessive weed use causes you to lose some of the receptors responsible for your apetite level or causes them to not be as responsive. Then you need chemicals to turn on the receptors enough to be hungry. Probably not that simple, but I always get my regular eating habits back after a week tops.

Toxins? Are you sure it's not just cannabinoids interacting with receptors? I don't think this causes them any damage. I would be interested to read what you read to give you that impression.

Also I don't think OP is talking about when you're under the influence per se rather how it affects your overall eating habits while intoxicated and otherwise.

I know there is a weight loss drug that antagonizes CB1 receptors rather than agonize them as cannabis does basically giving you the "anti-munchies". Here's a little wiki on it (i.e. this is what I've read take it with a grain of salt):
Rimonabant
Rimonabant (Acomplia) is a recently developed anti-obesity medication. It is cannabinoid (CB1) receptor antagonist that acts centrally on the brain thus decreasing appetite.[22] It may also act peripherally by increasing thermogenesis and therefore increasing energy expenditure.[22]
Weight loss with Rimonabant however has not been shown to be greater than other available weight-loss medication.[22] Due to safety concerns, primarily psychiatric in nature, the drug has not received approval in the United States or Canada, either as an anti-obesity treatment or as a smoking-cessation drug.
Sanofi-Aventis has received approval to market Rimonabant as a prescription anti-obesity drug in the European Union, subject to some restrictions, however, in October 2008, the European Medicines Agency (EMEA) recommended that Acomplia no longer be available in UK. One month later, Sanofi-Aventis decided it would no longer study rimonabant for any indication.

I think that it's basically a psychological thing where you become dependent upon the "munchies" to provide your hunger rather than increased metabolisms, toxins, etc.

Never let it be said that the CD quiz isn't educational!

^Did you not get that from the CD quiz? In that case, great minds think alike, because I thought I'd coined "anti-munchies".

I remembered it from researching weight loss drugs. I like your quiz thread, I contributed. :)

Actually yerg Cannabis has been shown to give your metabolism a boost, so if you are a healthy stoner you will stay fit/lose weight. Notice how even the stoners that eat mcdonalds everyday dont get tooo fat.

i agree with this.

when i used to smoke a ton of weed i wouldnt really feel like eating much until i was high, then i would just down anything i could get my hands on.
