This is probably a silly question, but I've been wondering for awhile so I'll go ahead and ask. If MAO is heavily involved in making neurotransmitters inactive so that not too much ends up in your brain, is it possible that taking MAOis and eating certain foods/supplements (5htp?) you could actually get high due to less neurotransmitters being "deactivated"?

Fair enough. Not like I was planning on trying it lol but it was making me wonder

Yes in the case if you take L-dopa, carbidoapa and an MAOB-I such as deprenyl but it is not a real great high, though you can get elevated brain dopamine levels

And hypertension... Or am I mistaken?

Oh, I was a little off- there are definitely reports, search them here, of PEA+Selegiline, or possibly another MAOI and getting a CNS Stimulation supposedly not too different from amphetamine (not surprising considering the structure) but as I recall, it had too many peripheral effects (hence my hypertension comment).

I should have thought about it more, but I'd just stuck a lot of liquid in my bum... Man- getting an 8mg Suboxone to dissolve and not be entirely mud is hard as hell

Some of the real old school non-selective MAOIs like iproniazid and tranylcypromine can be pretty euphoric in high doses (euphoria and mania are listed under the "common adverse events")

However they also put your blood pressure through the roof and have a tendency to cause nasty headaches, and thats without even mixing them with anything.

When you add other drugs (or foods containing tyramine like cheese or marmite) then the interactions can easily be fatal, which is why these drugs don't tend to get prescribed any more.

Yes actually it is the case, you can take a MAOI and some supplements and get "high". This can be really dangerous though, and you have to be sure about what you're doing.

What comes to my mind is the amino acid Phenylalanine, which is said to be euphoric when taken with MAOI.

Selegiline won't do anything with MAO-A inhibition until you get to a very high dose. In other words, it is not dangerous with 5-HTP.

Years ago, there was rumor circulating that you could experience a 5Meo-DMT trip by ingesting l-tryptophan containing products, such as chocolate, while MAO-inhibited. Never confirmed it, though. :)

It was actually started by Bob wallace, I believe, formally of Mind Books, also one of the original founders of Microsoft. If you have beef, I guess you could go talk to him...if he were still around. :)

though i have been curious regarding ingestion of N,N-Dimethyl-Tryptophan with OR EVEN WITHOUT a MAOA-I (or its 5-MeO analogue which due to greater potency and reduced conversion to 5-hydroxy analogues may have even far greater chance to "work")

By what means is the toxicity exerted? I would have thought it would be quickly decarboxylated in vivo?
