Manitoba man gets 20 years in ecstasy case

BILLINGS, Mont. - A Manitoba man has been sentenced to 20 years in a U.S. federal prison for trying to bring an estimated $5.5 million worth of ecstasy pills into the United States.
Timothy Morneau, of Winnipeg, was convicted in January after a 2 1/2 day trial before U.S. District Judge Richard Cebull in Billings, Mont.
The 32-year-old Morneau was found guilty of conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute ecstasy and possession with the intent to distribute ecstasy.
Morneau's co-defendants, Alan Mulder and Christian Laurin, also from Winnipeg, pleaded guilty in January to conspiracy to possess with the intent to distribute ecstasy.
Each of them was sentenced to four years in prison.
Police say the ecstasy bust was one of the largest in Montana's history.
Morneau's sentence was handed down Thursday.
The three men were headed for California on Feb. 9, 2008, when a Montana Highway Patrol trooper stopped their vehicle on Interstate 94 near Glendive because a headlight was out.
A search of Mulder's car turned up large, heat-sealed plastic bags of ecstasy pills in duffel bags. Officers found 223,819 ecstasy pills weighing 64 kilograms.
Mulder, 20, testified that he and Laurin, also 20, were roommates and that another roommate asked if they would help transport drugs. They agreed because they wanted to make some money and left the same day with Morneau.
Mulder and Laurin crossed the border in a car near Deloraine, Man., while Morneau used a stolen snowmobile to cross the border with the drugs, according to court records. The three met up in Bottineau, N.D., and headed west.
