How naive i was before i moved to Manchester, thinking it was going to be full of working class geniuses. The reality is that intelligence and education, or any attempt at old fashioned self-betterment, like reading books or watching BBC2, seem to be despised by many working class Mancs.
Give us your wallet, fuckin' student.
It's the same in any deprived area in Britain, or indeed the industrialised world. It's not a northern thing, it's just a sad fact of life.
Try growing up in a shithole and it's hard not to get beaten down by it eventually, even if you aspire to more. There are plenty of people quite ready to kick the shit out of you if you're in any way 'different', and unfortunately having read a few books and not keeping it on the quiet is enough to get you marked out as such. Never mind dress code. Then you throw the rampant inequalities in the education system into the mix, and well... there's another thread entirely in there, so I'll stop.
Ice T (bizarrely enough) actually put it brilliantly in the Ice Opinion. Though he was talking about racism, ghettos and the lack of aspiration among young black people growing up in them. Which, with the widespread use of vile words such as 'chav', we're almost verging on in terms of socio-economic cohesion and the way people are treated / perceived in this country. Scary, ain't it?
Some of these kids are barely able to conceive of a world outside their own ghettos. Some of them are almost oblivious to the fact that they live in a big city, even - they literally can't see further than the boundaries of their own district. It's fucking tragic.
I do suggest you get about the city more though, as I can assure you there are plenty of working class folk who don't despise education, books or BBC2. Hell, we even pushed the boat out and listened to Radio Four in my house.
Maybe you don't identify those people as working class though?
