A blaze that swept through a dogs' home has now claimed the lives of 60 animals, police have said.

More than 150 dogs were rescued from the fire, which broke out at Manchester Dogs' Home in Moss Brook Road in Harpurhey on Thursday evening.

A 15-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of arson and is being questioned.

A JustGiving account set up by the Manchester Evening News had raised more than £860,000 by 17:00 BST.

The newspaper has also captured aerial footage showing the extent of the damage caused by the blaze.

In the aftermath of the fire, the manager of the home said 60 dogs had been housed in the worst-affected building.

Pretty upsetting stuff, especially as it wasn't accidental. That's one sick cunt...

I hope that the person responsible for setting the fire gets the full weight of the law thrown at him for this. That's an amazing amount of money to have been donated in a short space of time and i saw on the news that local people were turning up at the dog shelter to give them dog food, blankets etc.

Yeah, my Facebook was absolutely full of people talking about it, near enough as soon as it started, because I live near Manchester. Unfortunately, the lad that did it is only 15, so he's not going to prison (at least not at the moment). I think he should be released, and people can just deal with him as they see fit. If he went to prison, I don't think he'd come out alive, anyway. Even hardened criminals like dogs. I can't get my head around why someone would want to murder 200 dogs, especially using fire. There's some fucking evil cunts about.

It's a grisly, shocking story, for sure.

Harpurhey's like a village within a city, so if anybody's concerned about whether the kid's going to 'get away with it', then rest assured he really won't. Unless he moves out of the area, perhaps.

I don't want to dwell on the recriminations though, as it's all too easy to get incensed about an act like this and lose sight of the fact that the lad who they have in custody isn't old enough to buy a packet of fags. I'd rather look at the reaction of the wider public, which has been commendable to say the least.

The news said the police believe other people were involved. The lad had to break into the place, in order to do it, which makes it even worse. I can't wait to hear his reasons. When you're 15, you understand that murdering animals is wrong. Fuck, when you're a toddler you know that. Let's hope he's not released, because it'll be people that he's fucking up next, assuming no one gets to him first. Got to love (Greater) Manchester, eh?

When I was fifteen I knew killing animals was wrong. I knew plenty of things were wrong, but did I have quite the understanding of the consequences of doing wrong that I have now? Did I fuck. Admittedly I only have acts of petty vandalism, theft, minor arson, a couple of smashed heads and a few broken hearts to feel penitent about.

I'm not surprised there were more people involved, and that raises the issue of mob psychology, which muddies the waters even further.

Don't get me wrong: were I in the same room as him I'd be tempted to maim the little bastard, but I do think you're getting emotional rather than attempting to look at this with any kind of objectivity. Which is fair enough anf very understandable, but it'd be a shame to see a thread turn into a hopeless ragefest.

Yeah, I agree it's pointless staying angry about it. I've said what I think of the person(s) involved, and I'll leave it there. Emotions are bound to come into play, when things like this happen, but I'm not about to hunt the kid down.

I might be a cat person, but it is sickening to hear of this all the same.

Regardless of whether 15 year olds have less of a grasp of consequences & what is right/wrong, it was one sick fuck who did this. Athough as quite rightly pointed out by Sammy... peer pressure / mob psychology (may or may not) have impacted on any rational decision making.

Wow that 's just sick n upsetting. Whyyyyyyy?!?!?!?! I'm a cat person myself but still love dogs dearly. And it was a dog who kept my Nain Peggy alive for many years. She was alone , had angina n really suffered - jesse kept her company n was such an affectionate spaniel cross sheep-dog. Before that , her mother, Penny, who was also an affectionate dog. Dogs are lovely, wonderful companions n give a lot of people a reason to get out of the house each day. My Nain couldn't in her last years n so Jesse was her companion.

I don't understand why or how anyone could do such a horrid thing.

I'm really very shocked n upset about this :(

Aye, hes been rehoused with his family for his own safety. His motive was that he was attacked by a dog earlier and had been in hospital, which is why he was caught so easily.

Still though, managed to raise over a million quid, you would not even be able to raise a thousand quid if a fucking orphanage was bombed and 45 kids were killed, in a country you know that the majority of the public could not give a fuck about. Everyone has a wee doogie though, so I guess it hits everyone reaally hard.

Very generous though. :)

A caller on Jeremy Vine named the kid and said he was a well-known peice of shit.

I must admit I couldn't give a fuck about orphans or starving kids. We need to get away from this cult of human worship - we're a curse on the planet and if a billion of us died tomorrow the planet would still be groaning under our fucking weight.

I do mean more the other life on the planet than the rocks and stuff tho Bob. We're living through the greatest mass extinction since the dinosaurs and we've barely got started yet.

If they want to be generous why don't they adopt one of the dogs then?

Money = easy guilt solution.

Not always possible to have a dog tho shm - if everyone in the house is at school or at work when does it get a chance to shit?

SHM, I read your blog n WOW - you've a way with words. I never knew you could write like that (sorry that came out wrong) I mean I don't know you really but you've a way of writing that appealed to me. Have you ever heard of Frank McCourt? He wrote Angela's Ashe's and 'Tis.... He was AMAZING in the language he wrote, truly and utterly amazing... After reading his books I was emotional for 3 weeks - not because of what he went through (though what he went through was obviously turmoil enough). The way he wrote in first person, present tense... I repeated GCSE English because my teacher hated me, gave me an E and I knew I could do better, do poetry n what-not. But when I repeated GCSE English n received C, was so pleased because I got to read Frank McCourt n that man, apart from some personal trainers, was my true IDOL, god rest his soul the man was a true and utter legend!!!!
