Man Held in Solitary Confinement 2 Years After DWI Gets $22M

Fk i dunno about you guys, but id definatly do a 2 year bit in solitary for 22 million..... especially in a mexican jail. But to each their own

Fail. Ever been in a jail cell 23 hours a day? Fuck that shits crazy enough... solitary for 2 years is unimaginable.

how is that even possible? i cant believe that someone was actually detained in in complete isolation like that with absolutely no reason.

ive been locked up in city cells for a week and it wasnt that bad. only had 1 roomate for 3 days then off to the provincial slam where i finally got to watch tv.

i guess it depends on a persons mentality and strength on being alone.

I like being alone, because i cant trust anyone.

But yeah as for real solitary, no i dont know other than being cooped up for 24/6

22 million though, worth almost anything to me.

it doesnt happin to this extent but shit like this happins all the time, dont get me wrong this guy got fucked in every way possible all at once but think about all the people who are innocent doing time just because they needed a fall guy..

Forced solitary confinement is torture, pure and simple. There is no doubt in my mind that the legal and criminal system is merely a "legitimate" means for retribution and violence. Funny how we have all these apparently healthy members of society turn animal as soon as fear strikes a nerve. Funny how they all stick up for each other and delude themselves into thinking that they're not just as ill as the murderers and rapists they torture. Well, maybe not that funny. Depends on whether you're looking out of a tiny window or at a prison while standing out in the open, I suppose.

On the bright side, I bet you could do some very deep meditation in those conditions if you have the right training behind you. You'd go in a vagrant and come out a Buddha. Om, bitches.

I agree about the meditation, and I thought about the same thing.
I would deal with solitary by practicing meditation and yoga for many hours a day.
Exercise the body and the mind, and try to keep sane/healthy.

Here's another story about the jail's response. In it, it's said after the first few days, "he was offered an opportunity to join the general population in a cell block with a day room. Slevin refused, and the only option after his refusal was to place him in one of the facility's 28 administrative segregation cells. For the next five months, records show that he regularly requested and received medical attention and commissary purchases. After that period, he stopped requesting those services. He frequently refused offers to leave his cell for recreation and exercise..."

And regarding the tooth:

"...But the county countered Thursday, saying there was care available for Slevin in an "independent medical wing, with full dental and acute-care capabilities," Williams wrote. "The detainees also have access to library books and a fully stocked commissary. Visitation is available five days a week. The facility is inspected twice annually by members of the Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners and regularly by the U.S, Marshal's Service, which rents out up to 300 beds per night for federal detainees."

If the jail was intentionally mistreating him then why make records of his refusal of attention? Why not just say he refused it all along? If you have a dental wing regularly used by prisoners, why not refer Slevin there if he requests it? All Slevin says in the video is that he has "no idea" why they treated him that way. It's so vague. There's clearly something wrong here, but it's hard to imagine that Slevin is just some random normal drunk driver who got thrown into a cartoonishly oppressive system like it could be anyone in his situation... Where are all the other former inmates and employees coming out of the woodwork to tell their stories about the hell hole? Why didn't the jail do more to contact the DA's office if they say it was "entirely" in her hands. I'm holding off judgment one way or the other until there's more information because it's all too weird.

you think prison records are never faked?
I was reacting to the post by the person who wondered if anyone could have ended up like this man. I'm not saying there wasn't/isn't something seriously wrong, just that it's not clear from the story exactly what that is (there's a lot of obvious questions not addressed by the story). Perhaps it involves something like criminal negligence of a mentally ill person who is extremely depressed and unresponsive coupled with the incompetence of an administrative and court system that is supposed to be tracking the dates he moves through the system. Where is anyone else who knows this guy inquiring about where he is (like his friend who liked him enough to borrow him his car [and presumably go to where he was arrested to get it], or his sister who, along with his friend, is now "supporting him" -- just ran off with your car and disappeared without you wondering?)? What I'm saying is it's not just a bunch of sadists who don't care working in conspiracy to fuck an average guy in the wrong place at the wrong time like it's a 19th century gulag. If conditions are so extreme that anyone can disappear in there like that, no doubt we will soon hear of dozens of former inmates trying to contact the press and assembling a legal team for a class-action lawsuit.

Something about this story doesn't add up.

This whole situation is fucking unbelievable, ffs

But this makes it totally out of this world fucktarded. Seriously, how can shit like this happen?

I also heard they offered him 2mil settlement after they released him if he agreed to not sue and just let it go. But luckily he was smart enough to say suck my bawls, I'll see you in court.
Hope he gets to enjoy his new life now

The was treatment like you would get in a POW camp.

Hardly. Even prisoners in Guantanamo bay get treated better. At least those guys have access to medical facilities.

This guys story is incredibly. 2 whole years of solitary for drunk driving. Damn.
