A man uses a syringe full of blood to steal thousands of dollars in prescription drugs from a Howard County pharmacy, and it’s not his first attack.

Meghan McCorkell has more on this unusual heist.

That man told the pharmacist that blood was tainted with AIDS and threatened to stick her if she didn’t hand over the prescription pills.

Police say Benjamin Frederick Blessing, 52, walked into the CVS on Centennial Lane in Columbia last month and held a blood-filled syringe he said was contaminated with the AIDS virus to a pharmacist’s chest. He threatened to stab her if she didn’t open a safe containing medication.

The robber got away with $27,000 in prescription pills.

Investigators say they found evidence inside Blessing’s Columbia home, including the prescription drugs stolen from CVS.

He now faces multiple charges including robbery and assault.

Police say they have confirmed blood was inside that syringe. They are testing to see if was indeed contaminated with the AIDS virus.

that mugshot looks EXACTLY like the kind of guy who would wave around a blood-filled pin screaming about aids and drugs. oh well there's been weirder robberies before. anyone seen that tosh.0 episode where a guy tried to rob a convenience store with a tree branch?

The HIV virus would technically be correct.

:\

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus Virus? That seems less correct. Viruses do not as such 'infect' other viruses or anything else non-living. Such leads us to conclude one can not have a HIV Virus. Calling it the AIDS virus is similar in concept to calling O. Variola M the 'smallpox virus' or H. Cytomegalovirus the "mononucleosis" virus. Not the proper name, it is still readily understood what is being referenced, and the specific implication of it.

Not the first time and nor will it be the last.

A guy I went to rehab with was telling me that there was a guy at his methadone clinic that he had a lot of problems with, and one day another guy warned him that the guy had a syringe filled with blood on him (it was known that he was HIV+) and that he said he was planning on sticking my roomate with it. I took all the stories I heard in rehab with a grain of salt, but that would be an odd story to make up. Sadly a lot of older addicts that have been at it for a while act like little kids. I was half the age of most of the people in there, but I acted older than almost all of them.

Completely different circumstances, but it just goes to show that people how desperate some people are. Now I'm wondering what the results of the test will show, but I wouldn't be surprised if the guy was making it up that he had HIV.

Yup, its sad how people will go so low to just get a fix. I mean seriously if you're going to hold up a place don't threaten someone with aids. I mean a syringe with clean blood will be just as scary... Don't harm a person over some prescription pills. I mean steal, fuck over your dealer, whatever but don't threaten an innocent person's life.

Its so sad people do this. It has happened a few times around where I live. People get so desperate at times and then they pull this kind of shit. I also know how you feel about the older junkies acting so immature. I've witnessed it and had to deal with some. Its crazy how me being eighteen could be more mature than the 30, 40 ect. year olds I was using with. I mean of course there are immature young kids and mature older people but the more you grow up the less immature you should be. Yet, so many people have proven me otherwise.

I think in a lot of ways people stop developing emotionally when they sink into a serious addiction. They get so focused on the cycle of getting high and staving off withdrawals, constantly numb their emotions and drift out of normal society until they're no longer exposed to the kinds of stimuli that force us to develop and grow as people. It's part of what makes getting clean so hard, trying to pick up where you left off.

Not saying that the guy is HIV positive, nor that it has progressed to full blown AIDS; however, in his mug shot, he does look awfully pale, perhaps somewhat sweaty and underweight (but yea that could easily be from something else).

I know that about roughly 6 months after I was started on methadone, everyone was telling me that I looked pale as a ghost - some started calling me Casper. To this day I'm still not sure why I turned so white, but I think it had something to do with methadone either increasing my prolactin or decreasing my testosterone levels. I was also sweating very easily and I would have bouts where I felt really weak (no energy).

Is the shot full of blood considered "a deadly weapon"?

IMO this would probably be a more effective method to get what you want, even more so than a gun or other lethal force.

I'm not crazy about the idea of truly having contaminated blood in the rig though.

^ Yea man, I bet a lot of people fear being threatened with AIDS more than they fear being threatened with getting shot. It's pretty well known that a lot of people don't intend on actually shooting anybody, but some crazed person with a syringe full of contaminated blood probably seems more likely to use it. I'm not saying that they would, but they just appear crazier so people would probably take the threat seriously.

This is a holdup! I have a syringe full of blood which won't harm you at all! Give me all of your drugs, or I'll have to leave without hurting you!

^^ LOL reminded me of Space Balls for some reason.

"I am your uncle's brother's sister's cousin's nephew's roomate."

"Woah! What does that make us?"

"Absoltely nothing! Which is what I'm about to do to you."

Wouldnt filling up a water gun with hiv+ blood be a more effective weapon? Pretty sure you can hit more moving targets like that
