A SQUATTER caught with ecstasy worth more than £2,000 in his rucksack as well as a dealers list, cash and scales has been allowed to walk free.

George Pawsey, 24, was searched by police after they stopped a car in Bristol on Christmas Eve last year.

In his rucksack they found 82g of MDMA, known as ecstasy, seven wraps, broken tablets, a dealers list, scales and £6,473 in cash.

But Pawsey, of City Road, St Paul's, was sentenced on the basis that he had bought the drugs for personal use and had only sold amounts to friends to fund his addiction.

Replacement Combi Boiler from £1,850

Pawsey was at Bristol Crown Court for sentence after pleading guilty to possession of class A drugs with intent to supply, possession of a class B drug and possession of criminal property – the cash found in his bag.

James Tucker, prosecuting, said the Crown believed Pawsey was a commercial dealer buying and selling drugs for profit.

"He told police in interview that he was unemployed and that the only legitimate source of income was gambling," Mr Tucker said.

He told the court Pawsey submitted a plea saying he was homeless at the time of the offence and living in a squat so carried all his belongings with him. He said he was staying somewhere in Clifton.

Mr Tucker added that when asked if there had been any pressure from anyone he replied "there will be" again establishing he was part of a drugs chain the Crown said.

The court heard that Pawsey claimed he had used £1,250 of his savings to buy MDMA because it was cheaper to buy in bulk.

He said the MDMA was supposed to last him from when he bought it until his birthday on February 25.

Mr Tucker said Pawsey had no previous convictions.

Caroline Spedding, defending, presented references describing him as a young man who had lost his way but was now back on track.

She said Pawsey had a large amount of money on him because a friend had asked him to buy a large amount of drugs on his behalf.

"He has come a long way in his life since Christmas last year," she said.

"This has had a considerable effect on him. He has got himself a flat and obtained funding from the Prince's Trust to pursue education.

"He is using his skills to build a positive lifestyle and stay away from the lifestyle where he was in squats.

"He has done a business course and hopes to be self-employed as a web page designer."

Judge Michael Harington said he accepted the basis put forward and Pawsey was given a 12 month prison sentence suspended for two years, will be supervised for 12 months and must do 200 hours unpaid work.

Anyone familiar with the law? This case seems a bit suspicious or am I just prang?

Just goes to show how important it has to have your (bullshit) story straight should you ever be stopped.

De-facto decriminalisation?

All well & good but I want the actual letter of the law changed to decriminalise ALL recreational drugs possession. Genuine recreational drugs possession! Lol

when I see these kind of storeys my first thought is (rat) and its usually true because iv seen rats in my home town get away with shit like this and then there is some bullshit story in the paper about it.

Sorry but I think the likelyhood anyone gets off with that is they stuck somebody else more wanted in the frame. Speaking from what I have seen personally. Even if a friend asked you to buy a large amount for them in the eyes of the law you would still be dealing..

Police don't cut deals in this country. He didn't walk free, he still has a conviction.

If he did he's probably not gonna be too chuffed about his fortuitous sentence being plastered all over the news then given...

Mr Tucker added that when asked if there had been any pressure from anyone he replied "there will be"

And it's definitely still classed as dealing if you score for other people. That's more or less the definition of dealing, in fact. Bloody good brief convincing a court that 82g of MDMA - some of it in wraps - counts as percy though :D

Im still sure he is happier with the story that he didn't rat others to the police to save his own behind. give it awhile when the story dies down and the lads he rats out get their doors kicked in. then it looks like he had nothing to do with it. police wouldn't be able to operate without informants, that's the way its always been.

Of course it is. And to be perfectly honest I actually don't have a massive problem with much of it. Very much depends on circumstances but the level of hatred directed at anybody even accused of grassing is just ridiculous. People get seriously fukked over just cos somebody scrawls a word on their door and stuff. Kangaroo Courts are not such a great idea.

I never got in enough trouble to need to consider it but if I somehow ended up looking at a serious stretch - especially if only on the fringes anyway, which is the only way I could've gotten into such a predicament really - I can't honestly say that I wouldn't consider it under any circumstances. Not like some of the scumbag bagheads I've known who would happily grass folk up for barely more than a bag or two or just to get rid of people they owed money too, but if serious jail time is on the cards and you know you ain't the one that really deserves it... I actually have no idea what I'd do in such a situation but I would suspect anybody saying they wouldn't even think about it no matter what the circumstances were is a liar. More or less nobody will say anything more than go along with all that "Stop snitching" bullshit, but more or less everybody does when push comes to shove.

I totally agree with you that anyone that says they wouldn't do it under any circumstances is full of shit. I suspect that many of the people that say they are not snitches are probably snitches. I dont like the scumbags that constantly get off because they sell out small time people just so they can save their own ass. when it comes to big time shit like selling someone out for murder, sexual crimes or big time dealers who are scumbags to the people around them, then im all for giving information to the police. as i say again i just dont like pieces of shit who dont deserve to have their own holes saved getting off at the expense of a lad who might be a nice enough dude that sells a bit of something.

I am of course reluctant to flat out accuse him of becoming an informant. I won't know unless people start going down. I'm really more interested in reasons why he's been told to co-operate with the police and how that could possibly do him any favours. I am amazed that someone is able to get away with such a huge amount of stuff.

Does anyone know of any larger cases that have gone to court and got off lightly?

I would like to think I would go to prison (even with all that would entail for someone like me) rather than drop a mate in it. I would also like to think that I would starve to death rather than accept food from a Christian.

But I'll also be among the first to admit that it's very easy to aspire to lofty ideals when you're not staring the alternatives in the face. The whole point about desperate situations is that you can never be sure how you're going to handle them. The further you are away from dark and scary places, the easier it is to say things about those places .....

Perhaps a better question might be, "Could I ever find it in my heart to forgive someone who was placed in a situation where they had no sensible choice except to inform on me?" Now, that is a hard one. Perhaps they genuinely believed I would be OK.

There but for sheer, blind luck go most of us, if the truth be told.

Abso-fucking-lutely.

Take note peeps.

And yes Julie,mI know one person with biggera mounts who also got off with dealing by proving chronic MDMA addiction with the help of drug services in Brighton.

I didn't realise that it was possible to get off with such a large amount. Interesting. Do you know anything about what the media is told if someone does choose to inform for a shorter sentence?

If you ever find yourself in trouble with the law over drug charges, find out who this guy's lawyer was and get them!

Happens all the time people walking on large quantities of Class A drugs . The Police cut deals on the daily & the only people that know are the perps & the Cops.
First thing you get told if your caught with Drugs is " We can do you a favor if you want to help yerself out"
