lung problems

To clarify, I never have (and never will) smoke tobacco. I do smoke cannabis occasionally (once or twice a week), but I will refrain from that until I recover. My main question is whether aerobic exercise hurts or helps recovery.

but as for the damage to the cilia in your lungs and throat i'd be surprised if there was anything you can do.. something tells me that if it were possible to repair smoking damage it'd be a topic of WIDE discussion!

All that link did was confirm that the respiratory system does naturally recover from smoking. The rest of the information was specific to chronic tobacco smoking. There is not a buildup of tar in my respiratory system, so the part about exercise does not apply.

it takes time brotha, lots of time. i suffered a chemical burn comboed with smoke exposure (heat burns and chemical burns are the two types of lung trauma) and it literally took me 2 years to feel 100% again.

hopefully you don't have it so bad. between your throat and the bronchii smoke does cool down a fair bit so as long as you don't feel pain in your chest then i'd wager there's probably nothing wrong with ya breath box

No, I do not have it that bad. I do not feel pain exactly, but IIRC I felt a little sensation when biking quickly yesterday. Unfortunately, some pathogen has taken advantage of my burnt cilia and I am a little sick now. :(

Well, tar is mostly used in reference to tobacco smoking, but all it is is partially combusted particulate matter that results from burning any plant material, so year there would be some buildup of "tar" in your respiratory system.

But to answer your question aerobic exercise will indeed help your recovery along. There's no need to go crazy and run a marathon, but an hour of aerobic exercise a day can do wonders. Anaerobic exercise is good too, but aerobic would be more beneficial to your cause.

My lung partially collapsed, will it ever be safe to smoke weed again?

While sitting on my PC the right side of my chest started to hurt spontaneously. It was a sharp pain that lessened over the next few hours. I thought nothing of it even though I could only take shallow breaths and it hurt to lay on my right side. It felt like something was stuck in my lung and also hurt alot to cough. Three days later I took a flight back home for my brothers birthday, and upon landing it started to hurt significantly more.

I decided to not tough it out anymore as my dad told me that if it was something like bronchitis/pneumonia (which I've had both in the past year) both my lungs would hurt, and it wouldnt have started as such a sharp pain out of nowhere.

Anyway went to a doctor and he was right - my right lung had collapsed 15%, and I was diagnosed with spontaneous lung collapse. The way he explained it wasn't how I thought a lung would "collapse" but I had a wrong understanding of the lungs in general. He said that the cause for this condition was unknown, but consisted of a pocket of air trapped outside my lung but still deep in my chest so it had nowhere to go. As I breathed in, the trapped air would push on my lungs as they tried to expand and it would hurt.
As a 160lb , 6'2 , 18 year male smoker (smoking weed out of pipes/bongs and unfiltered american spirits daily) I fit every risk factor possible to get this condition.

He said they'd have to insert a tube through the side of my ribcage that would let the air out. They shoved a long hollow tube with maybe a diameter 3-4x that of a pen cartridge after numbing my skin with lidocaine. This is the worst pain I had ever felt in my life, the surgeon said that most people generally did not experience this much pain. My heartrate went from 50 to 150 in a second and kept jumping as he couldn't get the tube inside. He went to get a scalpel and made an incision on the rib lining so he could push it in. When it was in all the way it was still the most uncomfortable thing I'd felt to date. Just it moving around hitting my tissues would send me into excrutiating pain. I couldn't literally lift a finger, any tug on a muscle in the torso would send me into horrible pain let alone staying completely still, I involuntarily would start tearing up.

I was left there for around 30 minutes as the ER nurse got the proper authorization to give me pain meds. Finally I was given 2 milligrams of morphine and a 5mg vicodin, which did nothing for my pain. I was carted to the room I was gonna be staying in for the next few days but the pain was still excrutiating - the attending nurse noticed this as she saw I was unable to move myself off the gurney onto the bed even. She told me she'd go talk to the doctor really fast to authorize something for my pain. Two minutes later she told me he had authorized 4mg hydromorphone IV and then 2mg every 2 hours until the pain had subsided somewhat.

My eyes kinda lit up at this even in my traumatic state as I was somewhat of an opiate virgin, and had read hydromorphone is one of the most euphoric opiates to take IV. The nurse administered it and I floated to planet mu almost immediately, within 2 minutes the pain was still there but it no longer came in waves of sharpness and I found it much easier to ignore it simply by focusing on another thought. The nurse administered 2mg more as I said it was still very uncomfortable. I guess the vic from before kicked in as well as all pain had subsided at this point (I still didn't try to move though as that was very uncomfortable), and I started to nod hard.

I didn't really sleep that night, I nodded off for like 30-45 minutes a few times but I was having too much fun watching TV and talking to my Mom who had decided to spend the night at the hospital. The nurse would periodically come in, ask how my pain level was and administer more medication. They also started giving me Toradol (an NSAID) which to me appeared to potentiate the pain-killing and sedating effects of the hydro.

This lasted for about 36 hours. They stopped giving me the hydromorphone as frequently but it was all good because it didnt feel like someone was fucking around with my insides with a steel rod anymore whenever I moved. They x-rayed me again and said that my lung had reflated to its former size and the air had rushed out, to be careful the following weeks and that there was around a 20% chance of this happening again since it was a spontaneous case. Yanked the 6-7" tube out and told me to take tylenol/ibuprofen for pain, and to come back in a few weeks for another x-ray even if it didn't hurt.

Anyway now since this has happened, I haven't smoked any weed or cigarettes. It was hard at first but I've gotten used to it and changed my habits alot. I'm dying to smoke weed though, but I can't get past the fact that smoking anything may be a risk factor - before my lung collapsing I was pretty much training to be an olympic bong ripping champion. Everyday I'd take gigantic snaps taht would fill my lungs from all the way empty to all the way full with smoke (I'd exhale all the air when the smoke reached the top of the bong), and each time try to inhale more. I'd milk the bong so slow, sometimes taking 30+ sec for a rip to make sure I didn't destroy any THC by overtorching / snap any unspent weed. Then I'd hold it in for at least 20 seconds. After that point i loved blowing all the air out of my lungs REALLY fast. I can't help but think this weakened my lungs somehow so now I'm afraid to smoke, even to hit a pipe. Under no circumstance do I want my lung to collapse again.

I've given up cigarettes for good (I realized how shitty cigs were a long time ago I was just heavily addicted ot them for the past 2 years and couldn't quit until I was forced to), but I want to start smoking weed again as its one of my favorite pastimes.

So my question is to anyone who has had this condition and smoked, if theres anyone out there, should I risk it? I never even asked the docs about how much smoking weed (say a bong toke every few nights) would affect it as i was afraid in the future it would affect how they prescribed me powerful/euphoric drugs i may or may not need. This was honestly the most traumatic experience of my life, if the risk of it happening is increased by even 5% by smoking weed I'm ready to quit for life. It just hasnt been made clear to me if whether the increased risk from smoking is from the additional cheimcals added to cigarettes, nicotines constricting effect on the lungs (as opposed to THC's dialating effect) or if this risk is increased in putting pressure on the lungs in general through inhaling anything that requires some suction.

there's almost guaranteed to be a more than 5% margin of error amongst the answers not answered to you by a pulmonologist. if you want the real odds, look at what the consequences are. you can either excasterbate the problem or you don't. that's two options. i.e. 50/50 split.

i wouldn't risk it at least until i knew all about the exact problem. thanks for the nice story too, it was very pain-inspiring. well written

Why would you put yourself at risk like that again? I could understand if smoking were the only possible delivery method. It is not, however. Edibles, vaporizer, just to name some (arguably) safer routes. Options. Please familiarise yourself and explore the possibilities.

Man I didn't read the whole post, but some air got into the membrane that surrounds the lung. This deflates or collapses the lung. Yes you should be able to smoke weed after a full recovery is made. Stay away from cigs, though.

I've seen people start smoking weed and cigs again a week or less after getting out of the hospital for a collapsed lung with no problems, and no more collapsed lungs 5+ years later.

Vaporize, friend.

You shouldn't be smoking stuff anyways, so take this opportunity to invest in a vaporizer and you won't have to worry about your collapsed lung, and its just way better for you in general. :)

I was in a really bad car accident about 8 months ago and both of my lungs collapsed (fully) so i had to be on a ventilator for a week or so they also became infected i became septic at the time but anyways 8 months later i am able to smoke weed it tends to pain my chest so i dont really make a habit from it but you should be fully capable to smoke marijuana

Bleeding Lungs?

Greetings,
I have got a rather urgent health concern that I hope can be advised upon by members here: Yesterday (when sober), a situation required for me go from stationary to running full speed for 2-3 minutes straight, so strenuously that eventually I had to stop when I was gasping heavily for air using my full lung capacity and could not run anymore without rest. I then had to walk about another half mile or less taking it slow.

For 30 minutes to an hour proceeding my sprint my lungs were somewhat in pain and I had a constant moderate taste of blood in my throat. Today my muscles are VERY sore (mid-back, ankles, especially upper and lower legs) and not even insufflated opana dulls the pain. Though I do not taste blood anymore, the upper portion of my lungs gives me pain if I inhale too deeply, and the upper lungs are mildly mucous-filled similar to a "cough".

[Health background: I am a healthy man in early 20s, ~160 lbs and athletic toned body. I take daily supplements (Omega 3 fish oil, D3, C, and multi-vit). I play tennis once/twice a week in the summer (not now), and have never noticed any lung problems. I do NOT smoke tobacco, but I am a daily cannabis smoker (.1g or less of very high quality bud). I have noticed that because of smoking my upper lungs are mildly sore (usually just after smoking) and give pain if I sprint instantly without "warming up," but I never tasted blood before.]

Is it possible that my lungs bled yesterday? If so, what damage could I have done, and how permanent is it? I would assume my cannabis smoking makes my lungs more vulnerable, so do you think it is partially or fully to blame for the blood and pain?

p.s. I do NOT have medical insurance, I have no credit history, and I am barely squeaking by and cannot by any means afford the cost of medical advice unless life-or-death. ANY insight into this will be greatly needed/apprec.

I used to get that when i smoked too much weed.
its not good.
go to doc ASAP most cancers can be treated but catching them in time is the problem.
i used to cough up blood.
get X-ray, CT scan or MRI
and some blood tests will show if its serious.
good luck

^ id agree with ranunky, but you said you have an 'athletic' body (assuming you mean you have an athletic lifestyle). In that case, id go talk to a doctor.

it probably isnt anything extreme to worry about, its likely that your lung tissue is not very strong and cant handle a hard 3 minute sprint. cross country trainers often get bloody lungs/throat when they first start training long distance running. if you were a total 'couch potato,' then id attribute it to weakened flesh. given you play tennis 2x a week, you should be able to handle a 3 minute run. if you feel there is something wrong with you, consult your physician. else, id start jogging a few times a week for an extended period of time to build strength in your respitory system.

the muscle soreness is likely from going from stationary to full force run without any sort of warmup or stretch.

Okay. Mainly I was worried about the blood I had tasted from the lungs I assume (organs bleeding is alarming to me). I'm not a total couch potato. I get a lot of muscular workout frequently as I do some heavy lifting for my day job, and exhaust my biceps at the gym once a week. However, I do not get nearly enough respiratory workout as I should (now that it is winter), and I guess this combined with daily cannabis smoking contributed to the inability to handle a full-speed run from stationary.

weight training does nothing for your lungs really. however, doing cardio workouts will really help with weight training as it will increase your lung capacity.

i smoke weed every day (filtered via clean bongwater). however, i live an extremely athletic lifestyle. if i diddnt, i would be worried about the effect of the herb on my lungs.

it was probably just your upper respiratory tract shedding a bit of blood as a result of being agitated by the herb smoke. do you use an unfiltered pipe? those are harsh fuckers. if so, get a bubbler at the very least to filter the smoke. personally, i wouldn't smoke or vape at all if i were doing such hardcore cardio. all that weed you put into your lungs has to come out at one point, light cardio makes it come out easier but breathing like bellows will just worsen the damage

i had my lung collapse may 2009 and i smoked cigs and weed. after that happening i quicky quit smokeing cigs but not weed. i still continue to smoke weed.. i smoke it bout 7 times a day. bongs joints blunts everything... Feb 23rd my lung collapsed again. id recommend you not smoke weed, but its youre choice. i learned my lesson for the 2nd time to quit.
