The time had finally come on friday afternoon at the 2005 Bonnaroo Music festival. I finally got my hands on some good LSD. I had tripped on mushrooms 3 times previously and felt I was ready to expand my experiences with a new mind-altering chemical. It was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had on a substance, but I'll start with giving out some background info.
It was the second day of the Bonnaroo festival and the first day that music was going down. The weather that day was hot to say the least, but not too bad. We started off the day like any other, taking a trip down to where the shows were, but on this day we had a goal, to find some good, and real, LSD. We almost made it to the music area when this kid comes walking towards us tapping an acoustic guitar that was slung over his shoulder murmuring the words we had wanted to hear: "Doses, Doses". Us being amateurs at buying drugs off of strangers, we were a little intimidated at first, but I eventually approached him to see what he had. I was with 2 of my best friends at the time, and we each proceeded to purchase 2 tabs. The guy called them "Pharaohs". The tabs themselves were part of a bigger picture so they didn't entail much detail other then some green and yellow lines and whatnot. Supposedly they took a while to kick in, but were very clean. We pocketed our newly found treasures and decided to go back to home-base to rest up before our day was to begin.
At around 3 pm, we decided to make our way over to the music that seemed to be beckoning us since we had heard it on our walk to obtain acid. We arrived to Allison Krauss & Union Station playing at the main stage. We camped out on a grassy patch and smoked a few bowls to relax and get in a good mindstate before the trip. At 3:30, my one friend decided to take his 2 tabs. We relaxed for a bit more and made our way over to Jurassic 5 at 4:30. I then took my 2 tabs as they started to play hoping that they would kick in just in time for the Allman Brothers at 5:30. My friend who already took his tabs wasn't feeling them yet which made me a bit uneasy, thinking that we had gotten ripped off. We smoked a bowl for Jurassic 5, eagerly awaiting the effects of the acid to take hold of us.
At around 5:20 we make our way over to the Allman Brothers at the main stage to get a good spot. My friend is starting to feel funny, but he doesn't say he is tripping yet. He has also been smoking so it could have just been the weed. My other friend takes his acid now. So it's the three of us at this point, all with LSD in our systems potentially striking us at any minute. We meet up with a group of girls that had come down with us and wait for the band to take stage. They start the show off with a bang, and I immediately begin to dig their music. I have never really gotten into them before, but my views were about to change. As the Allman Brother's first hour of the set goes by, we generally just chill and smoke a couple of bowls. This guy next to me with his trashed girlfriend offers me some "juice". I take a few sips of what tastes like a Vodka and Clear American combo, but who knows what could have been in that.
At around 6:30, things begin to change a bit. For one thing, Warren Haynes hair on the jumbo-screen begin to start glowing an electric red. The song "Revival" went on and the music started to hit me in waves. Everything seemed to just slow down and a biggg grin emerged on my face. This was it. Everyone around us was dancing, and I understood and started to dance with them. I pushed aside any insecurities I would have dancing in a big crowd of people and let loose. The show went on and I kept feeling the great vibes the band was letting out. My visuals at this point include a glowing of everything, the sky, stage, and crowd all had a little more edge and beauty. The Allmans proceeded to finish their set with wonderful renditions of "Franklin's Tower", "Melissa", "Dreams", and "Jessica" in that order. I can only describe it as musical heaven. As T.S. Eliot put it, it was "Music heard so deeply / That it is not heard at all, but you are / the music / While the music lasts." I was dancing my heart out, I was the music, not worrying about what time it was or what song was in store next. I was truly living in the now. As the music came to a stop for a bit, I looked back and finally saw the sea of people that had developed around me. I thought, "Fuck, I hope I don't have to leave". I was trapped but I could care less. As soon as that thought left my head, the band was back onstage with a spicy encore of "Whipping Post".
At 7:30 the Allman Brothers were over, which was pretty disappointing, but I was happy to leave the crowd of people for a bit, for I was starting to trip pretty hard. I couldnt really focus on one thing and appreciated having the group of girls to make decisions for us, since they weren't tripping. My friends were all tripping pretty hard right now too, and we had to make a decision of what to do. Our only real option at that point was to sit in for the Dave Matthews Band. Not my favorite, but certainly a better idea than to lose our guides and get lost going back to our campsite. We all decided that food might be good, so I got a big shish ka bob and took a seat kind of far from the stage with my 2 tripping friends, sans girls, but in a less densely packed area. Dave Matthews took stage as the sun was starting to set and night began to fall. At this point I was really out in space, and we all just layed down to take in the show. This one really intense Dave Matthews fan yelled out, "Show em' how to jam Dave!!!" and we had a big laugh at his expense. It was around 8:30 now, 4 hours since I had taken the 2 tabs, and I was starting to have some pretty intense visuals.
I layed down and closed my eyes, and stayed that way for a good hour, opening my eyes as little as possible to catch some of the light show. As I closed my eyes I had some intense visions of what else, but an Egyptian type of scene with pyramids. Particularly that image on the back of a dollar bill. I think this was due to the idea of having "Pharaoh" acid in the back of my mind. I was contemplating how human civilization has changed over time, and I thought about the beginning to now. I could think very clearly right now, and my thoughts were tremendously creative and seemingly unique. I realized at this point that I didn't give a fuck what any of the people around me would think and just tried to get as comfortable as possible and enjoy the music and the light show on the back of my eyelids. Time didn't seem to matter at this point. I felt free from the outside world, with the ability to shape my own fate. Music continued to pour into my ears. The highlights of Dave Matthews set would have to be apretty good version of "All Along the Watchtower" with Robert Randolph. And a song or two with Warren Haynes on guitar. Another interesting aspect was a "glow stick war" with glow sticks flying every which way in the air. I threw a few, and enjoyed the eye candy.
About three quarters through Dave Matthews set, I realized I had to go to the bathroom. I tried to avoid doing it for as long as possible but now it was urgent. So I got up and begin to attempt to walk out of the crowd into the concession stand area with the portapotties. This would prove very difficult. I felt like the closer I would get to something the further away it seemed. My vision was totally shot right now and everything seemed distorted, like I was at a funhouse. I couldn't really get myself from point A to point B. I eventually made it to the concession stand area but couldn't get to the bathrooms. The portapotties looked like they stretched on for infinity. Like I was looking at 1 portapotty through 2 mirrors. I couldn't tell which ones were real and which ones were fabrics of my imagination. I tried to ask a few people for help and they pointed me in the right direction, but it was useless. I walked near the walls in the back and saw some people peeing there, where it was pretty dark and not really out in the open. I decided that this is better then the hell of finding the real portapotties so I did my business there and tried to find my way back.
Again, this would prove itself very difficult. I remembered my landmark of where my other 2 friends were, but it didn't help at all. I was essentially lost from the group and tried not to panic, but it didn't help that when I called them, they couldn't help me any better in finding them. I wove my way through the crowd for what seemed like forever, and tried to call them one more time, pretty desperate at that point. Fortunately, my friend answered and said, "We see you!" and sure enough he was sitting about 20 feet away from me. I just laughed at that point and plopped back down on the ground and decided that this all deserved a bowl. We smoked and Dave Matthews ended at around 11:30, 7 hours after I first took the tabs, yet I was still tripping pretty hard. We decided to walk back to the campsite for a bit, to appreciate a more silent setting.
The walk back was easier then I had expected. Galactic's Krewe de Carnival was walking through, which contained many unique floats. This made for an entertaining trip back. We arrived back at the campsite at 12 and realized that our little canopy had slightly collapsed in the rain that had accompanied Dave Matthews. Not giving a fuck, we decided to sit under this makeshift protection from the elements. At this point I was starting to come down. I wanted to relax for a bit since I had been hearing music for the past 8 hours. We were out of weed too, which was starting to become a need. My friends decided at around 1 that they wanted to go back to see the Mars Volta. I abstained, not really in the mood to make the trek back in my worn out state. As they left, I sat there alone for a bit waiting for the girls to come back.
I kept hearing a constant "whooshing sound" and finally released what it was, nitrous. Curiosity finally killed this cat, and I ventured over to the whoosh, and obtained more weed, and a "buy one get one free" balloon deal. Overwhelmed with all of this I plopped down on the dryest, most comfortable chair, and started to go back and forth: nitrous, bowl hits, cigarette, repeat. This reckless behavior made things quite interesting. The nitrous would hit me and bring back the feelings of the peak of my trip. I would continue to ponder my life, religion, and the meaning of existence. All the usual crazy thoughts you can experience when you are alone with some substances. The girls eventually came back as did my friends, who basked in the nitrous and the newly acquired weed. Everyone eventually went to bed, me not being able to fall asleep until around 5 after I had a Lorazapram to calm my anxiety. All in all the trip lasted around 12 hours.
I woke up the next day a little hungover from the acid, yet full of new insight, especially musical insight. Since then, I have gotten really into some of the bands that have defined the jam scene, realizing what it is all about. "Jessica" still to this day gives me the chills when I listen to it on a warm sunny day. I haven't taken acid since then, but I'm planning on it next Bonnaroo, everything in moderation.
PS: If anyone would happen to have the 6/10/05 Allman Brothers show, I'd be your new best friend! Comments appreciated.
