HBWR - First Time – livid 2003: more interested in my fingerprints
The week before livid I was at a music festival on the north coast and bought a packet of 10 Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seeds. I was told these would approach a mild LSD-like trip without the visuals. I had never done any psychedelics before.
Setting:
I carried these seeds around in my wallet for a week or two waiting for a decent time to take them. I told my friend about them and we decided to take them at livid, an outdoor music festival (5 stages, 20,000 people) in Sydney, on a Saturday afternoon. I scraped off the fuzz around the seeds in the morning with my fingernail until they were shiny-brown.
Ingestion: +0 hr
Once inside the gates of the festival we (myself and two friends) sat on the grass in front of the large stage and I split the seeds with one of my friends. I stuck 5 in my mouth and chewed. They were surprisingly tough little seeds, the taste wasn’t bad but nothing pleasant, same feeling you’d get if you chewed on tree bark. I chewed for a minute and then left them under my tongue for 10 minutes, after which I swallowed them washing them down with water. At that stage I was really skeptical that these ‘stupid little seeds’ would do anything, and I pretty much forgot about them.
Nausea: +0.5 hr
I walked around for 30 mins or so checking out all the stages and performers around the venue and then stood in front of a stage while a ‘mellow’ band played. As I stood there I started to get a stomach ache and this got worse and worse over the course of the bands 30 min set. By the end of the set I was feeling nauseous and close to being sick.
First signs: +1.0 hr
I walked around with my friends for a bit and we decided to sit on the grass again. As I was sitting there the first signs of a trip started. Sitting on the grass my friend asked me if I was tripping and at that exact moment I snapped back from an intense mind wander.
For the last 10 seconds or so I had been day-dreaming to myself but this day dream was so deep that I had left reality and my body behind, my thoughts drifted so far as to stop processing my senses. It felt like I had been day dreaming for half an hour or more but the trip was only just beginning and I could tell that in truth it had been only 10 seconds… the band was still playing the same song and my friends hadn’t moved.
It felt like I was staring with my eyes straight ahead at the large stage setup on the grass but my brain and thoughts traveled on a 90 degree angle (to the left) all the way to the edge of the universe. I had never felt anything like this before and quickly shrugged it off and ignored it, still sitting on the grass and feeling crook.
Perception: +2.5hr
The day was sunny, however, there was a strong chilling wind and I decided I had to get my jumper from the car. At this stage me and my friend who had also taken the seeds left my 2nd friend to watch the bands and we walked towards the main gate so we could go out and into the car park. My friend at this stage was also beginning to feel different and we walked along in a half daze.
Once we got to the gate we were told that we weren’t allowed to get a pass-out until 3pm, another 15 mins, so we decided to wait there until they did let us out. As I was standing there chatting with my friend he pointed over at the wire-mesh fence a meter or two away from us and simply said “hey lets just duck under the fence.” I took a look and thought yeah good idea, totally convinced, and wondered why other people waiting to get out hadn’t just tried the same thing. We walked the few steps up to the fence and as we reached it, the gap underneath the fence, which had looked to be almost a meter high, became less than 10 centimeters. Laughing we commented to each other how potent these little seeds actually were.
Time Perception:
Returning from the carpark back into the festival I thought of my friend who we had left inside. It felt like I had last seen him 3 hours ago, however, in reality it was 20 minutes. The trip to the carpark and back, reflecting, felt like it happened a week ago, however we had only just got back.
As the day went on I lost track of time and just ended up meandering slowly with my friend not really noticing that there was a massive festival happening and bands playing around us.
Smile:
From this time on I felt really good and couldn’t get the smile off my face as hard as I tried. We sat on the grass again, ignoring the band playing, instead noticing for the first time our fingerprints. I was immersed in the detail of my fingerprint. The grooves seemed to get deeper and deeper and the print more pronounced as I stared at it, twirling around in huge arcs and circles.
Terror:
When we met back up with our friend he led us into a warehouse stage. There were thousands of people inside the dark hall and there was a hip-hop group performing. When the set finished everyone was heading towards the exit, towards chaos. When I reached the door it was sunny and bright outside but there were hundreds of people around and no room to move.
The surge of people in which I was in coming out of the warehouse quickly made it into a swarm of people where you couldn’t move and were just forced forward and out by the sheer number of people heading in that direction. I was just behind my two friends and trying as hard as I could to push my way towards them but within a second I had lost them, and I felt the most terror I have ever felt in my life. I tried to turn around and head in the direction I last saw them but it was like trying to head up a staircase in the subway on which a thousand people are trying to go down on… impossible. This was really bad but lasted less than a minute until they found me again, the feeling of relief was indescribable. I felt totally helpless and without control by myself.
Retrospective:
The effects first started after around an hour and got stronger peaking around 3-4 hours. At 6 hours I was back in touch with reality but I was still getting cevs and mind wandering. The next morning I felt detached and not totally in touch with reality. An intensity in colours of nature and environment was noticed for several days afterwards.
The sickness and nausea lasted most of the day for me. I was able to hold myself from being sick for most of the day, however, I did spew a bit when the music and people all became too much at one stage. My friend, however, only felt sick for at most half an hour and was fine within an hour of taking the seeds.
Sure if you take these, remove the fuzz coating, it can’t hurt, but the nausea-inducing properties are inside the seed and cannot be avoided unless you perform sublingual administration (chew/spit).
Pupil dilation or possibly perception distortion caused me to be completely blind in the near-dark. I couldn’t see where I was going in the indoor warehouse stage and had to rely on my friend to guide me. My eyes could not adjust to the dark and this was quite scary as I would have been stuck if I didn’t have my friend with me.
I had amazing closed eye visuals, reminding me of fractal images. I can only describe the cevs as a “rainbow nirvana.”
The sedative nature of the LSA was apparent as I was constantly yawning. This really didn’t matter though because I felt good and happy most of the time.
One other feeling I had for a while, walking around with my two friends was that I had no control over what we did, I followed them even though I was feeling really sick and needed to sit. I didn’t want to lose sight of them.
The experience had was really fun and vastly outweighed any negative side effects.
