So... As the title says, i'm a diabetic. Recently diagnosed. Borderline between type 1 and type 2. As anyone who's been diagnosed knows, the first things they give you when you're found to be diabetic are the sugars tester and the paper saying what you can and can't (or how to limit) eat. And as luck has it, alcohol and bagels are at the top of the list. But the thing is, being a diabetic really doesn't mean you have to stop eating the things you like, you just have to limit it. So... Where my question comes in is, what kind of drinks would you guys suggest i substitute for my old favorites now that i'm a diabetic? I was thinking Absinthe would probably be best since it only takes a little bit but i never drank that much before so is my guess even right? My 21st birthday is coming up soon so that's why i'm asking. Thanks!

The reason you shouldn't drink alcohol is because it's a complex sugar, to my understanding anyway. Peoples bodies utilize these different than sugar and it's difficult to tell how your body will metabolize it if you have diabetes. Basically alcohol can raise your blood sugar in combination with carbohydrates but used without your blood sugar amounts can drop dangerously low. Also the next morning when your hungover and feel like dying and are hugging the porcelain goddess dry heaving your gonna need your shot, same as any other day. I recommend you just abstain from drinking, if you live in a state like mine go get high in a rec bar or something. Also if you go out with friends and end up passing out or getting too drunk make sure they know not to let you just sleep it off so to speak. I heard powdered alcohol is available now although I know entirely nothing about maybe you should research and see if it's an option for you.

liquor Is low in sugar...beer..not so much...its the mixers that will get you...you could mix with diet versions but I practiced low carb living for fitness...im not too sure how things work for diabetics

Spirits and soda (like what Australians call soda... water with bubbles in it... not like Coke or Pepsi) was the recommendation given to my mum. But the main piece of advice was to cut alcohol consumption down or out completely.

Also, how can you be borderline between type 1 and 2 diabetes? They're two completely different things.
