Lortab for extreme tooth pain - please respond

I had my wisdom teeth extracted 2 days ago and was prescribed 10-500 Lortab (10mg hydrocodone, 500mg acetaminophen). I've been taking one roughly every five hours for the past two days. I just took one about two hours ago, but I am still in extreme pain. Would it be safe to take another one so soon? I promise I'm not doing this relationally - it has been extremely difficult to type all of this because of how bad it hurts. Quick advice would be greatly appreciated, as I know virtually nothing about opiates or acetaminophen.

PS: I did look on Erowid and they didn't have any dosage info about acetaminophen. I know it can cause liver issues and that's what I'm more worried about.

^This.

You don't want to go any higher than around 4,000mg (4 grams) of APAP a day. Don't drink alcohol or limit your alcohol intake while on the Lortab - alcohol and APAP will cause liver damage at lower dosages than just APAP alone.

Yes, at the dosage you are on now, it is ok to take two at a time if you need to. I agree with everything NT said above and will add that with the type of pain you are experiencing, it is best to stay ahead of it...maybe take two of your lortab and then consistently dose (it is ok to do every four hours) until you have a handle on the pain....

As said above, that would be fine. Also, though, you can use ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or naproxen (Aleve) to help with the pain in addition to the Lortab. It could make a big difference in pain, esp. tooth related.

I only drink alcohol once every few months or so. The only substance I use regularly, including caffeine, is cannabis. Anyway, thank you for the responses. The BL community is the best. :)

I agree with taking more to control pain. But if you takes 2 every 4 hours you may run out early and the dr may not give you more. You might have some unpleasant side effects with the pain relief. I would take 1 or 2 to begain with and take some Advil too. Advil will decrease the inflammation in your mouth. Also try some tooth gel to get local relief. After the 2 lortabs I try taking 1 after that. I don't know your tolerance to the medication, but I know if I took 2 every 3-4 hrs I would be sick. I have been taking them for almost 2 years.

I hope you feel better soon.

No problem OP

For some people, small-ish dosages of caffeine (think in the 30-50mg range) help with pain. For others, it makes it worse. It is safe to combine cannabis with Lortab (hydrocodone) as well.

but make sure not to suck in too hard or you could cause a dry socket...which fucking SUCK1!!!

smoking after getting your wisdom teeth taken out is not a good idea even though i did it and i did not experience a dry socket. that's how reckless i am when it comes to drug usage

Aw, lacaster, that's not that reckless on the scale of reckless drug behaviour! :)

If it's been more that 2 days it should be fine to smoke. Only about 2% of people develop dry socket. Mostly dentists recommend avoiding smoking for 2 days after an extraction because smokers have higher rates of dry socket; it is theorized that the chemicals in the smoke could slow the healing process. After a tooth is removed, a blood clot slowly forms in the hole left in the bone by the removed tooth. This blood cloth is the initial phase of the healing process. The blood clot’s formation may be slowed down when a person smokes. There is also the fear that strong suction could pull out the forming blood clot. But with smoking it is not really like sucking hard on a clogged straw or something, for me at least it is more like just breathing in through my mouth. Smoking a joint would have more suction though. But if it's been over 2 days since the OP got the teeth extracted, they should be able to smoke, use a straw, etc without too much fear of it increasing the likelihood of getting dry socket. Some dentists suggest waiting 72 hrs in the case of wisdom tooth extraction to be safe. Really even if a person smokes before 48-72hrs are up, the risks of dry socket are not that high and it is just a temporary and easily treatable, but painful condition. If someone thinks they have dry socket (ie they are in a lot of pain from the exposed nerve and there is just a hole to the bone where the tooth was instead of a clot), it's best to see the dentist so they can put some antibiotic in it and some gauze or healing paste, to keep it from getting infected and give a chance for the blood clot to form. I would say it's best to ideally wait a couple days and avoid sucking too hard if someone is going to smoke anything and make sure to keep the mouth hydrated, but not stress too much over it. Maybe in the interest of harm reduction I should be saying absolutely wait a minimum of 72 hrs before smoking anything, but I'm just trying to be realistic :). I told my dentist no way was I going to wait 48 hrs and she said just to try to wait a couple hours before smoking and smoke gently. It's not like if you smoke you're guaranteed to get dry socket.

I can't tell if you were being sarcastic when you said, "that's how reckless I am." Or if you are just really lame...

i think lortab for pain is a great way to get someone hooked, they last 2 hrs for pain relief, leaving u taking more to get rid of the pain, end result=opioid dependency
