There have been quite a few discussions over on the OD forum as to whether or not loperamide has any recreation value, or if it helps with your opiate withdrawals at all. Being the curious party, and opiate addict, that I am I decided to test this out, believing beforehand that no, loperamide will not cross the BBB (blood brain barrier, for all you laymen out there). So what better day than today, while the discussion still seems to be at hand.
I woke up at 6 in the morning (East coast), which is very unusual for me, but I was on the nod most of the night, so it wasn't really "sleep" anyway. I had had my last dose of any opiate about about 8 P.M. the previous night (60mg oxycodone and a couple of glasses of poppy pod tea), which isn't in itself a huge dose for me, but I figured that the lesser the amount of opiates in my system, the more accurate the test would be. I didn't wake up feeling weak or sick, but within the hour I started to feel heavy and lethargic, and my skin was glistening just a little.
Despite having opiates at hand, I opted to try the loperamide out. This was for a couple of reasons: Curiosity and cost-effectiveness.
I spent the morning drinking grapefruit juice and water, and trying to read a book ("The Hottest State" by Ethan Hawke - not terrible, despite my reserves about it). At around 11 A.M. I popped 800mg of Tagamet (this and grapefruit juice are supposed to help the loperamide absorb into your system easier and better). I popped "Harsh Times" (great movies) into my DVD player, and sat and waited. Time seemed to drag.
12:30ish:Twenty minutes before the end of the movie (roughly 90 minutes in) I retired to my bedroom and brought out the loperamide. I crushed up 6mg and broke it into 3 lines, taking them up my nose one at a time. This was followed by swallow 8mg with some more grapefruit juice (even though this would probably not have any overall effect in the long-run, I figured what the hell.
Time continued to creep by. My muscles ached and my shirt was beginning to stick to my cold back. Every part of me wanted to break out an Opana (I only had 2 left and wasn't getting anymore of that or OxyContin until the next day (tomorrow)) or to down some already made poppy pod tea. I've been in this stage many times, though, and I knew that the worst was yet to come.
I left out an important detail, so I guess I should add that about every 20 minutes of the last 3 hours I'd have to take a quick break and run to the bathroom. If you've ever gone through opiate withdrawal you will know why.
Back to the originally scheduled programming already in progress. It's about 1:30 PM and I don't feel much different. My stomach isn't rumbling, but my muscles still ache and I continue to sweat. I take a shower (my fourth that day) because I can't stand feeling sweaty or dirty in anyway, thanks to my partial OCD. I keep questioning why I would do this, after just posting in OD about how this wouldn't be effective, but it's already too late, and I only have a couple more hours to go.
It's 3:30 P.M. and not much has changed. I'm not running to the bathroom like I was, but I still feel just as bad as before. Maybe this and some benzos would help a person get some sleep, as they wouldn't be running to the bathroom 20 times a day, but it does nothing for my other symptoms.
At 4 P.M. I have had enough, and I crush up and sniff an Opana 40. On a side note, I just got a steady connection for these, and they're pretty decent. I still prefer OxyContin, but these do the trick quite nicely. After a good 20-30 minutes my muscles stop hurting, and I begin to feel like a normal (read: fulfilled junkie) person again.
5 P.M. I start to type this report up, feeling like a total ass for even trying this experiment out.
In conclusion, maybe in extremely high doses this could work. Maybe if you took 50-100mg some loperamide will slip past the BBB and take all of your aches and pains away, pinning your pupils and leaving you happy and content, but that wasn't the case with me and my relatively small (14mg) dose.
Will this end the loperamide argument? Probably not. I do know that I'll never question it again, because I tried my best and failed.
