Looks like we're entering the Brave New World

^I didn't intend to argue that TV in modern society is Huxley's soma in a literal sense.

Huxley deployed soma as a literary device anyway, its general function being an opiate of the masses. Soma is not an actual drug that he prophesied.

;)

I agree, but given huxley's involvement and curiosity with psychoactives--my interpretation is that huxley just enumerated the characteristics of such a drug--which he called soma.

It doesn't really matter either way I guess, though many new psychoactives are being discovered every year, and some of those are being tested and marketed to the general public. Many fit some of his enumerated categories--one just might qualify all.;)

^Just FYI, Brave New World was written 20 years before Huxley had his first psychedelic experience with mescaline.

***extracts foot from mouth***

Well, meaningless speculation for all of this. Literary device or not--his point is powerful, whether or note a certain drug will fill the shoes of 'soma' might not be the correct thing.

it's interesting for discussion purposes to take guesses, but soma might be the pharmaceutical establishment as a whole. If you've got problems--one pill or another will help re-integrate you into society.

I think any number of substances, entities or establishments could have intelligent, eloquent arguments made for being 'soma';)

If soma realises as a chemical compound the chances are you won't decide to take it someone may decide for you.

something more insidious is occurring, which Huxley saw coming a long time ago. While Orwell warned that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression, Huxley realized that no Big Brother would be necessary. According to Postman, Huxley predicted that "people will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think."

Orwell feared that books would be banned; Huxley feared that there would be no need because nobody would want to read books anyway. Orwell feared that the truth would be concealed from us; Huxley that the populace would drown themselves in a sea of triviality and irrelevance

Ugh horrible thought - mainly because it's so plausible.

I'm getting fed up with MXE. A couple of my friends hated it from the outset. The idea that this is some miracle drug is laughable and naive. Also there's alot of stuff in this thread that is being spoken of as fact, such as how it works on opioid receptors, which is just speculation.

I'd have to agree that the closest thing to a soma is TV, and that includes for me video games and such. The idea that an actual perfect drug could exist is flat out rediculous.

i know they mentioned soma in the book but i thought i remember a name of another drug that sounded like mescaline but it was called something else

Are you speaking of the Moksha medicine of Huxley's "Island"?

^probably referring to mescal in Brave New World... sounds like alcohol to me

anyways i still think mxe comes pretty damn close to soma..

keep and open mind, anything is possible.
perhaps one day we will see it ... im not sure about it taking over the world.. maybe eventually......... cuz there are tons of people who dont do any type of "drug" (i know people who are 100% clean and dont even take ibuprofen/acetaminophen for headaches)
