Uh, yeah, I'm kind of screwed for a while, and because all I'll be able to do is read I thought I might investigate the magical worlds of O-chem and technical drug knowledge that I know so little about.

So, if anyone could recommend to me:

1) What should I read or how should I go about learning about O-chem? In othere words, where's the best place to start for a complete novice?

2) I did a search earlier and found an old thread that had some great recommendations for various drug related books, but even Amazon doesn't seem to have all of them. Where's the best place to find medical/drug-related books?

3) Just in general, what can people recommend that I go about reading that would be beneficial?

Thanks for the help and recommendations in advance,

gerald

Are you intrested in psychoactive substances only? Organic chemistry is broad, and requires a strong background in basic chemistry. If you have not taken some basic chemistry organic chem will kick your ass (it will kick your ass one way or the other really).

Erowid is always a good place to start off. Good luck!

Yeah, I just realized that I sounded like I was going to jail or something... Actually, it's off to rehab and family-enforced lockdown...

Word to the wise: Never keep a journal.

Yeah, mostly psychoactive substances, but I have no idea how to learn about JUST them without learning about everything else too. I don't mind learning about other things, though, so there's no problem.

Damn, that sucks man. I never kept a journal for exactly this reason, I do shit I don't even want to admit to myself let alone put down on paper ;)

You can't actually learn JUST about psychoactive substance though. The thing is that the way they work can only be described in scientific language and with scientific methodology. It is basically a specialized field of pharmacology and chemistry.

So you will need to read quite a bit on pharmacology and biology, and if you want manufacturing info then chemistry. As for pure drug knowledge, I highly recommend Tihkal and Pihkal, absolutely definitive works on the subject.

For Cannabis, I suggest "Hashish!" by Robert Duncan Clarke (I think that was his name, but if it's something similar then that's who I meant ;))

For other specific chems I'm sure there are people far more knowledgeable than me to guide you.

Best of luck learning, but be careful in applying that knowledge! ;)

There are actually a couple very good books that focus JUST on drug chemistry/pharmacology and so forth. An AWESOME one that has pretty much EVERY class of psychoactive substance is "A Primer in Drug Action" by Julien. It's a 'nontechnical' book that covers in depth what you're asking about. Highly reccommended.

I know of one more good book that isn't too over anybody but a doctor's head. It's called "Ketamine: Dreams and Realitites" by I forgot, Jansen I think. Anyway, that's about K and the other drugs in its class. Great stuff.

Erowid.org should give you more than enough info and plenty of links regarding what you are looking for. The shroomery.org might have some info but I don't really know. Like said above, just check out Tikhal and Pihkal, both of which Erowid.org devotes a few pages to.
