Looking for people with experience growing Salvia...

I've grown other psychoative plants before.. Was wondering if I can use an HPS light to grow Salvia. Any kind of soil work best in particular? Does it grow very fast? Anything I should know before starting?
I was gonna buy the cuttings.. A mother plant is almost 100 bucks and that seems like a lot of money for me...
Just looking for advice. Thx.
