I have a legit pain issue from a shoulder injury. I believe my doc called it "chronic pain." He gave me a 90 pill RX for tramadol and a refill. My question is, generally speaking, how long does a doctor provide RX for pain? This is the same doc that operated on me. I actually use less that what is prescribed so I am not abusing it.

It's really depends on the doctor. Since tramadol isn't as tightly controlled as stronger narcotics, he may feel comfortable with keeping you on it longer. But eventually one of two things will happen- either you'll need a stronger pain med (which may mean a referral to a pain management specialist) or you will recover and not need it.

It's a good thing to use only as little as you need so that you don't raise your tolerance.

Lol that is funny because I should be using it more but I am too busy. I probably use 6 50mg pills a week but the RX said to use 4 a day.

good thing you try to combat the pain mentally,
and keep the painpills to relax/get high now and then.

you can avoid mental/physical addiction this way

BE careful with Tramadol, it's a quasi-narcotic and relatively effective SNRI.. There are lot of drugs that interact with it, AVOID stimulants especially amphetamine at all costs while taking Tramadol. I had a seizure from taking 200mg of tramadol and 30mg of racemic amphetamine(adderall) It was a grand mal seizure and I advise extreme caution when poly drug using.. Stay safe and as always stay informed.

If you take your medication as directed, your doctor should inform you of any possible interactions.

Tramadol is fairly effective for pain, and as long as you find a low dose is effective you could stay on it indefinitely. Your doctor should review this with you every once in a while to make sure your meds are still working.
