Hey guys, I am going to call a locum tonight to come and see me about being in pain and not being able to see my regular gp for another week. I have run out of my usual medication which is tramadol SR 200mg, oxynorm 20mg, dilaudid 2mg & pregabalin 300mg and have gone without for the past two days. I am expecting that they probably won't be able to or will not be keen on prescribing or stocking the oxycodone or hydromorphone but will they be able to do the pregabalin and tramadol script? Or are they able to actually bring sample packs etc to last me till I see my doctor next? I haven't ever been prescribed anything by a locum before so I'm not sure about what they can and cannot do.

I'm not keen on going to the local emergency department either, everytime I have gone there when I have been in the same situation I get sent home with nothing or just panadeine forte and more antibiotics and it is a complete waste of time, paying for a taxi at 4am etc really gives me the shits lol. Thanks guys.

edit - took too long to press enter

in that case, i doubt it that you'll get your dilaudid, you'd be hard pressed getting anything stronger than codeine or tramadol imo. , unless they were maybe from the practice where your usual doctor is from. it's a hard enough thing to get legitimate pain relief from an ER as it is, they have no sympathy for someone who's used their script early. i'm not categorising you or anything, i've been in the case that my doctor had decided to leave town without telling me and i had to go through some bad benzo wd's for short time.

you're best off seeing your usual prescribing doctor.

australia doesn't have enough doctors. we allow doctors from other countries i.e. New Zealand to come over, sometime just for weekends at a time, and work in various practices and hospitals.

They get paid really good money apparently.

That said why wouldn't a locum prescribe powerful painkillers? If its within their power and the patient has scripts/letters from their regular GP?

Yeah but the Hydrocodone bit gave him away. Plus, the fact that Lyrica is expensive as shit if you aren't a pensioner also highlighted my concerns as to where this chap actually lives.

There is an after-hours hours Locum service in each Australian major city.
There are rules outlining what they can and cannot carry.
You will have to Google and then call the locum service to see if they furnish you with what you require.

Rules forbid me to mention the names of the after hours doctor referral services.
