Living in Vietnam

Got a mate I use to record with who has been in vung tau for 2 years or so $25 an hour teaching english, $150 for a x2 bedroom 2 bathroom nice apartment overlooking the sea - weed cheaper than beer, he loves it always trying to get me out there.
 
Its looking like we might be arriving in Vietnam roughly around the time of the Tet holidays in February. Anyone got any experience of what its like? I've seen some posts saying to avoid it as everything will be closed, accommodation and travel fully booked and expensive. Other posts have said its a good time to go. We'd be in Ho Chi Minh City, could probably spend a bit more time in Cambodia and arrive in Nam after the holidays but were quite pushed for time as it is so would like to get there as soon as possible.
 
StoneHappyMonday. Can you clue us into the opiate scene in Laos? How are the police? Would very much like to got o Vietnam as my father was killed there in 69, just so see what the country is like, possibly find the area he was killed in. Im looking at Laos though. Ive only seen it over the river from Thailand many years ago.
Would love to hear any thoughts on Laos, and Cambodia as well if you have time. Im thinking of Burma as well.
 
As long as you're not stupid, Laos is a great place to buy and use opium. It's easily scored in Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng. Probably/certainly other places too, but I'm only giving you my direct experience. I guess the older you are, the less likely you are to get a police search. If you do get caught with personal amounts it's a $500 fine/bribe to get yourself out of it. I think you have to be particularly stupid to get caught though. Although everybody can get unlucky I suppose. But the first time I scored was directly opposite Luang Prabang police station. I've never had hassle. Tuk-tuk drivers are your friends. You need to bargain, they will start at stupid western price. If your bargaining is good you should reduce this price by up to 90%.

Cambodia is possibly the best country in the world to score a wide range of drugs. I never got opium there but it's certainly possible. I definetly think you get the best weed in SE Asia in Cambodia. Their pharmacies also sell the best things OTC that you can get anywhere. This may just relate to PP though. Ask Jude, he lives there.

Laos is my favourite place in the world. I'll be there in about ten weeks from now.
 
SHM, thanks for the counsel. I also plan to be there within the next year. Ive been to Mae Sai Thailand and to the center of the triangle where you can see Laos and Burma from the same spot. Have not been to Cambodia yet though. Spent a few hours on a day pass in Burma. Burma as far as I can tell from online stats is the number one producer of opium in SEA. When in Mae Sai about 15 years ago 20 grams of pure china was cheaper than an I phone. I don't have much interest in the cannabis although Ive been known to roll a fatty every now and again.
I just watched Anthony Bourdains No Reservations episode on Laos. Laos really does seem to be the last untouched land in SEA. I want to get there before the rest of the tourists overwhelm it like it will be no doubt.
Would love to hear any stories you have from Laos, tips on guest houses, haggling, where to go for a slushie since they don't have 7-11s. I know it sound cheesy and kinda wrong but I really want to ride an elephant, or at least be able to scratch one behind the ears.
 
So I've been out in Hanoi for about 5 weeks now and it's absolutley quality. Going to be heading down south through Hue, Hoi An and Danang. Lovely country with amazing people (for the most part).

Does anyone know if there are any mushrooms that are indigenous to vietnam? I'm gonna go to sa pa in the next couple weeks and want to make it that lil bit more magical ;)
