Literary Crime Fiction?

Hey, so I'm looking for a fiction book..third person POV, male protagonist, that preferably doesn't take place from the perspective of a cop or P.I. I want something gritty and crime related; drugs..or contract killing, something like that . I also would like it to be a tad bit more "literary" than your typical plain action novel, with more depth and character development and well written smooth prose. Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.
