Liking EDM too much?

So this is probably a stupid thread, but I think I am into EDM a little too much. I have a lot of friends but most of them are barely into music at all, let alone EDM. My GF think's i'm f'ing nuts, there was some spray painting guy on NYE playing some electro house in the street not even in a bar just in the middle of the street, and I was practically spending 90% of the night there because I was having such a blast just listening to the music and raging the hell out. I play it in my car all the time, anything from trance, progressive house, psytrance, fidget, electrohouse, glitch, etc etc. My head hurts right now from bashing it around so much during some Designer Drugs set I had on w/ my gigantic headphones before, and I'm a pretty clean cut looking person, not a headbanger looking guy at all (no offense to any of u!)

I am into music of all kinds but I just have a crazy obsessesion w/ EDM, it feels more like a religion and a way of life than just music to me, it basically gives me energy if that makes any sense? I've never met anyone into music on ANY level as much as I am, let alone w/ EDM, but I love it even if I'm a weirdo :D I'm just a lifelong die hard EDM fan, I remember going to summer camp w/ my buddies and when Zombie Nation - Kernkraft 400 came out we were just pumping it everywhere and couldn't believe the awesomeness, it was just too much. It still is.

Man that's awesome.

I've been excited about music ever since I can remember. But I do remember when I began loving EDM, it was my favourite kind of music for a while.

I guess you'll either move past this phase as you get older and listen to a bigger variety of music (while still forever retaining a soft-spot for EDM). Or you'll stay loving EDM all your life. It doesn't matter either way. There's no right or wrong answer, it's music. Personally, I went through phases when I was younger (obsessed with hip hop for a time, then EDM, then indie rock). Now I just listen to a lot of different music.

Also, you sound like you really have an interst in music. To the point that it's hard to relate to others. I guess as you get older, you'll probably still always have an interest in music, but you may not be so obsessed with it. I've found that my interests seem to balance out just a little bit as I get older. For example, I was obsessed with video games all through childhood and through a lot of my high school years. But then I discovered other stuff and kinda moved on.

Music is different to video games for me though. Music complements my social life (going to gigs/club nights, talking with friends about music, trying to make music, etc). And doesn't necessarily get in the way of getting things done (because it can be put on in the background.)

Tips:
- You should channel your passion. Maybe try learning to DJ, or muck around with a music production program and try making some music.
- As for not knowing other people who are as into music as you. There are people, I bet. I'm sure you will meet them. And if not, there's internet forums devoted to it.

This. It's been a few years for me, but I feel like I'm still in that honeymoon phase :D

And this. Definitely a lot of fun, and it makes you appreciate EDM so much more when you're trying to produce it.

I pretty much only listen to electronic music... 99% of the time. I can't get enough of it... it tickles my brain. I liked cheesy dance music when I was a little kid, and when I was 14 I came across HHC. People laugh at me, but I'm used to it and I really don't care. I don't listen to the crap the think is "techno" anyway and I know it. We live in the digital age... it makes sense that music would be made electronically, and even though most people don't acknowledge it, movies, tv, commercials, pop music, bands... there is sooooo many electronic aspects to all of these now.

EDM is win. Im basing my future around it so yes. Im addicted.

Just mad for it. Not stupid at all.

If they dont like dance, they cant hack the pace.

Sometimes I wish my friends were more into EDM. I have to be forceful about getting them to go to certain concerts with me, haha.

I don't think it's a bad thing, and none of my friends think I'm weird for it. I just wish I knew more people that were as in love with EDM as I am.

I actually started going out alone sometimes because I always wind up meeting a bunch of people I probably wouldn't normally hang out with. If I am with friends I usually spend most of my time with them so I don't mingle as much. Not sure where you are though, its easy in NY because there are always so many events.

I'm in Providence, so not quite as much is happening. But I might try to go solo to one or two of the big upcoming nights at the local EDM club.

If someone doesn't like EDM then they haven't found the right type, honestly. Electronic music can almost replicate any sound produced by an analog instrument, and much, much more. Same is for effects. certain things can also be done which is near impossible with most analog instruments such as psychoacoustics and stereo-separation. I love most types of music, but aside from a full on orchestra its hard to match the complexity that EDM has to offer my ears. and thus it is about 95% of what I listen to. The fact that I produce electronic music as well also has a lot to do with why it is my primary source of music, because new beats and new sounds stimulate new ideas. I have just recently gone back to school for Audio Engineering and plan to build and develop new sounds and instruments one day!

Haha, I wonder how many other EDM heads also dig 60s prog rock and 90s rock music...

I see a connection with 60s prog rock in terms of the use of electronics as well as the song structures. I don't quite see a connection with 90s rock however, which tended to have basic-traditional song structures.

I was a hip hop head in high school before an EDM head. Hip hop seems somewhat related. I mean, the whole idea of sampling and beat production, etc.

Yeah I agree about the 60s prog rock connection. The reason why I mentioned 90s rock is because a lot of the current EDMheads probably grew up in the 90s, so a lot of us have a soft spot for 90s rock music because of Nostalgia. =D

I don't listen to too much rock, but I will always have a soft spot in my heart for No Doubt, The Offspring, Greenday, Nirvana, Bloodhound Gang, RHCP, RATM. :)

I'd even go as far as saying that early hip-hop was a part of EDM and some of it still has a very EDMish vibe (Early DJ Shadow, some early G-funk tracks?).

Does anyone else here like Animal Collective? They are one of the few indie rock groups that I like a lot.

Yea <3 AC. I personally consider them an electronic act (at least now and recently).

Their live set, when I saw them at the end of 09, consisted mostly of analogue-styled manipulation of electronic samples. Mixers, and a drum and symbol sort of thing set up, and singing. It was a great show.

But yea. I guess thinking of electronic music as seperate from other music is becoming evermore an outdated concept.

(btw I'm loving Avey Tare's new album. If you liked Merriweather I'm sure you'll love it as well, unless you've already heard it. :))

Anyone here listen to Particle? =D They are a hybrid jam band/eletronica band, very cool, they play basically all live shows and have almost no studio material available I think

you sound exactly how i feel. i literally feel like i have a connection with EDM, like it can change my mood, gives me energy, basically makes everything better. and despite EDM spanning a MASSIVE range of music, i like almost all of it, with the exception of some really minimalist house or psy-trance.

Me! =D
85-90% of what I listen to is EDM. And all genres. Only genre I'm not so into is hhc.. only some.. but dnb, dubstep, trance, psytrance, hardtrance, hardstyle, breaks, techno, drumstep, electro, house, fidget, tribal, progressive house, trip hop, minimal, etc, and all the sub genres that come along with that, I enjoy!
Hardstyle, trance & dubstep are really prominent on the van rave scene, wish there was some more dnb and stuff as well but ya can't have everything. Unfortunately seems like lots of the younger ravers like hardstyle and hardstyle only. All music is good. Wish they could open up and experiment with other genres. I mean I'm a young raver.. but hey..

And non-edm?
I like alternative, rock, classic rock, prog, hard rock, indie, grunge, ska, reggae, acoustic, all kinds of things. A few things I dislike would be bad country, shitty hip hop/rap, top 40 kind of pop music. Not that I dislike all of it, there still are some good songs out there!
Music appreciation FTW <3

Wow, sounds really cool. I had a chance to see them when I was living in LA, but I ran out of money so I couldn't afford the ticket. :( Don't think I'll be able to see them in Ukraine. Hopefully, I'll get a chance to see them if I move to the UK for my Masters degree.

No, I haven't heard his new album. I'll look into it though. I've heard Panda Bear's solo work and it was pretty good. I like AC more though.
