Okay so I just had this idea to make a thread where we can share what we've learned about drugs that we have extensive long term experience with. Topics could include trip safety, "crash" management, getting clean, etc. I emphasized "past or present" in the title because one thing that would be very valuable here would be some input from people who've managed to overcome an addiction to something permanently.
Okay, I'll start with the lessons I've learned about my drug(s) of choice: amphetamines.
Well, amphetamines aren't exactly interchangeable, but the ones I've used are all pretty similar in terms of how you handle them, so the "lessons" I've learned are pretty universal.
So, here are the big things I've learned.
Dosing
- Generally it's best to take pretty moderate doses, repeatedly if you like. Huge doses don't get you a lot more euphoria, but bring out the negative effects way more.
Enjoying The High
- Sex or masturbation is the most fun way to spend your time on speed, followed by doing work.
- Socializing can be fun, but it'll make time fly way too fast.
- Don't re-dose more than 3 or 4 times. The effects go sour if you re-dose like a billion times over several days.
- There's a 1-2 hour period after the peak of an amphetamine buzz where you'll still feel pretty good as long as you're busy with something, but will feel like you've crashed if you're too idle. It's best to spend this time doing crossword puzzles and other straightforward procedural tasks.
Managing The Comedown/Crash
- You're still wired for a while after the euphoric part of the high wears off, but you don't have the kind of "energy" you had during the peak. The best way to make use of this agitated pseudo-stimulation is to just go for a walk.
- When you start to crash it can be tempting to try to keep the high alive by drinking tons and tons of coffee. It's CRUCIAL to resist this temptation. Coffee can prolong a fading speed high by a few minutes, but it makes the crash so much more sickening that it's just not worth it.
- Cigarettes after the crash is a bit more complicated. Chain smoking will aggravate the comedown sort of like coffee does, but one or two cigarettes an hour can actually help.
- Sometimes the crash is just horrible, and there's not much you can do about it. This is especially the case when you mix speed and alcohol. The best thing to do here is just go for a walk and keep reminding yourself that the worst will pass pretty quickly.
Long Term Use/Addiction
- There's something uniquely dangerous about amphetamines in that you can convince yourself they're helping you be productive.
- The thing is, though, the whole "hard work/productivity" effect of amphetamines is reeeeeeeeeeally overrated. Yeah, you do get more task-oriented energy, but you're compelled to use it on whatever random shit you feel like doing. You're more likely to stay up all night doing crosswords than to actually work on whatever task you're supposed to be doing.
- Withdrawal symptoms consist mainly of lethargy and depression. You don't get obsessive, romanticized cravings like you do with coke. The best way to deal with withdrawal is to try to arrange a somewhat lighter-than-usual schedule for the period when you attempt to quit.
