Lemsip addiction?

Just wondering if Its possible to be addicted to lemsip as been finding lots of boxes and packages of this and paracetamol and Missus complaining of colds and sore throats when she looks fine.

Also being quite cagey about it all, and lying about buying them.

Just to add my Missus has some learning difficultites and some history of depression and has come off Prozac this year.

I dont think a physical addiction would be a problem however like everything else a mental one could be struck up quite easily.

Paracetamol is no good for the old body either, iirc its quite damaging to the liver in high doses so I'd try and get it sorted asap as lemsip combined with paracetamol will equal more than what she should be taking...

I swear there used to be a thread on plugging warm LemSip. Quick search should turn that up easily.

Or try giving brimz a call. He has no doubt mainlined plenty of lemsip in his days, straight stirring it in the spoon to dissolve the skag.

I'm pretty sure lemsip do not produce a preparation with codeine in it so there is probably nothing to worry about. Are the paracetamol tablets just paracetamol or are they with codeine?

My GF used to take shit loads of paracetamol, for mild headaches that could probably be cured by having a glass of water etc. She was going through a box every 1 to 2 weeks, once I pointed out how many she was actually taking she stopped pretty much. You should probably avoid taking it where possible, it's not really very good for you.

Yes I have mentioned this to her before that paracetamol can be not very good for you. This seems to be a regular occurance of finding stashes of cold and flu meds, keep saying I don't want any of this in the house but I'm ignored.

Could be the phenylephrine?

Apparently some people do get 'addicted' to its (shitty) stimulant effects.

It sounds like she just has some kind of fascination with taking medicines though, regardless of their actual effects. I've met people like that before.

Well my Missus is a bit annoyed I found her latest stash but that's all been thrown away.

I think she may have a mild case of that thing where you think your ill all the time with various things and I remember a few years back having loads of Asthma meds from her Doctor and how that happened I will never know as she doesn't have Asthma.

Yeah I was going to say perhaps she has health anxiety or something of that ilk that is making her think she needs the medication.

Yeh could be phenylephrine i suppose as its all the time finding lemsips stashed.

If it's the blackcurrant flavour, then that is fairly moreish taste-wise.

Although they've recently found paracetamol to have anti-anxiety effects, so there's that also..

Yes it does seem to be the Blackcurrabt flavour weirdly enough.

Have I posted enough serious responses for me to say "Lemsip addiction is nothing to be sniffed at" and not come across as some kind of lousy comedian?

I found a single reference to some letter a doctor wrote to the BMJ that said they noticed some people at their practice who we're using blackcurrant lemsip were showing signs of addiction...

Perhaps get rid of her stash & buy her another flavour... Might break the cycle of use.

Yeah, or try and wean her on to beauchamps powders. Much more of a mellow buzz IME.

You really need to get her to stop now. Paracetamol is a horrible drug which will cause severe problems if she is using a lot. The maximum recommended dose is 4g/day, though serious liver damage can occur at much less than that. I could understand it if she was using co-codamol (paracetamol and codeine) as they are relatively easy to get hooked on due to the codeine. I would even go so far as to say she would be better off with a heroin addiction - but obviously that's not recommended either!

It certainly sounds like she may have a touch of hypochondria, coupled with the placebo effect of taking various OTC medications.

Yes I think your right I have explained to her the health implications of too much Paracetamol hope this will stop now, probably not addiction as you say maybe hypochondria a bit it does happen, could be a lot worse I suppose.

get her onto something less toxic - talk to her, see if she if getting high from it or getting high from the use of it. Say you have been reading up about this and think she may like x instead - replace x with some vitamins and caffeine.
