So, I kind of want to get into target shooting or something, but have no experience w/ guns. I know I should take a safety class, which my grandpa teaches so that's not a problem. My question is, how does one go about legal obtaining a gun? Just go to the store and buy it? I'm not a felon so that's not an issue, just ignorant to the whole process.. Any 1 w/ some pointers.
Also, if I buy a legal gun off a friend how does one go about transferring ownership? Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry if this is a no no topic.

It would be easier to answer this question if you tell us where you live :P

if you go to a gun shop, they should be more than happy to answer any of your questions and explain the process to you.

I quick search says you can't buy one until you are 21 years old in WI. you can posses at any age so if you are under 21 someone will have to buy it for you. I would suguest a .22 cal long rifle to start out. remington 597 is the tank of .22 caliber rifles IMO. had one since I was 16. shoots better than any other semi-auto 22 I have ever touched. I cleaned it for the first time when I was 26. ten years of abuse an it still chugged along like a champ.

you can plink at close range and they are accurate to well over 100 yrds but most of all the rounds are cheap. you can buy over 1000 rounds of .22 for what you would pay for 100 .45 ACP.

If you are under 21 and would still like to buy a gun...most states let you buy primative weapons at age 16. Muxzle loaders are considered primative weapons and today's muzzle loaders are just as reliable as modern cartiage fiering guns. they do requier much more care than regular guns.

Nah, I'm over 21 so that's not a problem.. Just looking for some pointers.. I'm ignorant to the whole process and I don't know any1 irl that has guns.. Just want to get educated on the best 1..

ask any gun store or cop and they'll point you in the right direction. I was similar (didn't know anybody w/ guns, not legal ones anyway lol), and ended up getting my CCP classIII i think (large capacity / conceal carry) in MA. Was a complete PITA but welllll worth it.

as far as trading guns, it depends. I can purchase a handgun from my neighbor if I want to here in FL, but if i go to a store I have to wait a day (*unless* i'm trading guns; if a gun goes from me towards the purchase, i can leave with handgun that day). PPL exploit the living hell out of this around here, with the "gun shows" (ie "come purchase guns w/o oversight flea market"). In MA, the rules were wayyyyy stricter, yet when i got my ccp and went to the store to buy my 1st gun, i was riding home with it that afternoon (rugerP345, fantastic firearm adn definitely my fav pistol i ever owned)
ALWAYS get and save paperwork, i have transfer papers to document every firearm that's ever come into / out of my possession (reasons for this CYA should be obvious)

but ya rules are very state-specific on guns, like in MA i had to take a course for weeks and pass test to buy a pistol (which i was allowed to carry), but in FL it's just an age thing (for buying one, not concealing it. You do need to permit here, like most any state, if you want to carry it)

what kind of shooting are you thinking of doing? I'd be damn sure about what my intent was before purchasing. I like big bangs, my ruger (.45) and mossberg(12G) were the most fun to shoot for sure, but neither was "practical". Was VERY fond of my modded-out keltec p11, couldn't recommend that thing enough for a fun pistol.

[plz note this is all relative to sporting and target, as you asked, and not defense. I cannot help nearly as much there, in that context i just see it as, basically, "a gun is a gun" lol]
[edit: i hope it goes w/o saying that having guns anywhere near drugs or intoxicated ppl is INCREDIBLY stupid.]

I'd probably just be looking to target shoot or something. I'd like to learn some defense as well but I guess I'm just trying to educate myself as I don't really know what's all out there..I'm not necessarily looking for a concealed carry license.

I'd have a lock for it .

Go to the gun store talk to them. If you just want to plink around a .22 rifle is the best thing ever, fun, cheap and easy. Guns are all preference and budget on my opinion. If you're worried about going to the gun shop or are curious about etiquette you can go on youtube and put in gun store etiquette. i'm sure you will find tons of info. Another thing you may want to look into is what kind of ranges are near you (if you dont have land to shoot on). As far as transferring and purchase laws run it through google you should be able to find the laws for your state verbatim and a more plain english version.

i gotta disagree on 22's, they felt so weak they didn't really have the "bang" that makes it as much fun IMO. The smallest piece i ever had was rugerLCP which is .380, and that was borderline for enjoyable to shoot (tho it was the smallest, slickest little pocket-piece if you were looking to carry it, tho honestly you don't seem to have that intention nor do most)

definitely an approach many do, but i've never ever been for that kind of thing, always like to jump into shit headfirst ;PP I don't think there's any detriment to learning on a 9mm(my highest reco'd caliber), certainly no disadvantage that's not overcompensated for by the PITA of having to go get something you actually did like after you learn (and, you'll have to re-learn your caliber to a degree anyway. My 1st was a 45, and i never got to the level of accuracy with that (or with my .380, but that's because of small slide/frame) that i could hit with my 9mm that i mentioned, the keltecP11, which is cheap, solid-enough quality<no interest arguing quality here>, crazy efficient sizing, and accessories til the cows come home at cheap prices (mine prolly had like 5+ random accessories from keltec and ebay lol)

I'm fairly small so I know I wouldn't want anything w/ 2 much of a kickback.. I'd like to learn on somethn small and just work my way up.. Be nice to find a shooting buddy also.

[mossberg5000<no that's not a typo, it wasn't a long-run production, actually iirc they had s%w manufacturing them..can't recall. obvi that's all aftermarket accessories.
Anyways that guy saw combat in afghanistan, really wish i still had him :|

ruger p345 by whatsintheboxxx, on Flickr
rugerP345 i mentioned, definitely the 'nicest' piece i'd ever had, although a .45 was too large caliber IMO.

Oooo Bad ass. Love that ruger.

I haven't modded it out yet.. it's pretty bad ass right now just the way it is but I might add to it after I try it out a few more times and see what I think would work nicely on it.

If you wanna learn to shoot get some clays and go skeet shootingZ find someone that hunts waterfowl or something

I first shot a mossberg 500 12ga and the bitch blew me away haha but now I just shoot my brother in laws guns, my favorite being the beretta xtrema 2. It's got a light quick and holds 12 shots. Feels like scarface when I shoot it just emptying the clip lol

But for real start off with a gun with a light kick and move up to bigger ones
