What are some countries that have legalized marijuana? Just curious... Thanks.

(the perfect vacation is deffinitely in amsterdam: fairly good prices on weed and shrooms.....ah i can't wait until i'm 21 - or is it 18?)

Ehm, no Denmark has not legalized Cannabis. And Amsterdam is in Holland =D

There is no place on earth where Cannabis is legalized - but the most tolerant country is definitely Holland - followed by a few provinces in other countries (parts of Spain are very liberal).

lol oops...

but it is *legalized* in amsterdam....as in u can go to one of the many coffee shops and buy weed....

Unfortunately it isn't legalized in Holland, it's just decriminalized and officially tolerated by government and judicial policy rather than by law.

They have the same law everywhere in Holland - and it is not strictly legal to use or sell Cannabis anywhere in Holland. It's a strange situation indeed :)

i hear countries in europe are generally more tolerant that the rest of the world

spiderman: not that i know of. The legal limbo during the summer months in Ontario's courts let the general population have a taste of decriminalization. A cafe opened and toking was allowed, but no selling of any kind was done or encouraged. (Although they still do sell salvia...) Marijuana has been "recriminalized" though, and users are now waiting for a federal bill on the table which would make possession under 30 grams or so a ticketable offence only. Hopefully it will be passed by the end of the year, but even that is up in the air since a new Prime Minister will be stepping in shortly.

Buds in Jamaica are pretty decriminalized. Still not legal though but accepted by all/most people their.

As far as I know weed has been decriminalised to various extents in;

Australia (South Australia and ACT only. Still technically a fine for possession)
Holland (Possession and small time sales are tolerated)
Belgium (Possession only)
Spain (Possession only)
Portugal (Possession only. There personal use quantities are quite large though)
Switzerland (Possession only. Dutch style coffee shops are apparently being trialled)
Jamaica (Not sure of the exact law. Apparently its tolerated)

There may be others and there are a few countries where the law is currently under revision.

So it is allowed to be sold, and you arent punished for possessing or smoking it??? How is that a state of illegality??

The laws in Europe - and Holland in particular - are more guidelines than hard and fast rules. The government can set policy that contradicts law - as long as they have a certain amount of ambiguity about the whole thing.

I believe it is impossible to officially legalize any drug through a legislative act unless you are prepared to rescind your signature to the United Nations act that gave all member nations the duty to maintain official prohibition against a wide range of drugs (the groundwork for this law was laid in the Opium Convention of 1912 in the Hague, but I think it wasn't untill the twenties that the United States pushed the League of Nations to make acceptance of the treaty a precondition for entry).

So - basically - international agreements would be broken if anyone "legalized" cannabis. They can "tolerate" it - but they can't put it on paper or make it official - even if they wanted to. And unfortunately - I think Dutch politicians never wanted to - Dutch law is absolutely full of ambiguities that are left up to the government at each to time asess and enforce as they see fit.

I live in Holland, and I`m not exactly sure about the laws about it, but I know that nobody will give you a hard time about drugs, as long as you`re not disturbing anybody. Even if you have less than 1 gram of heroin, cocaine, or 1 pill of E or less, you will most likely not be given a fine, your dope will only be taken from you. I like the way they leave you alone unless you are causing problems. If you mind your own business, you can get away with drinking on the street, but if you are too loud or whatever, they will come and throw your drink away and it might even cost you money. I`m too stoned to explain it properly, I`ll come back later

I wouldn't be surprised if it was tolerated in parts of Africa, and little pockets of local tokels all around south and southeast asia, not that the latter would be easy for a foreigner to just walk into and spark a doob. Cops might let the locals go on their merry-j-way, but see a foreigner and squeeze him for a fat bribe.
