Leftist Discussion Thread

Trump was the most unpopular Republican candidate ever. He is an admitted perv and gives the overall impression that he doesn't know what he's doing. Americans for the most part knew that, yet more people voted against Hilary Clinton than against Trump. Bill Clinton's wife, as its self-appointed leader, has loomed over the DNC for more than a decade while she waited to be coronated for the position she felt she was entitled to. What boggles my mind is that Progressives in the DNC sat back and let it happen.

DNC leaders are seriously thinking about a Hilary 2020 (according to a recent Politico article) which will guarantee Trump the presidency again.The Left is severely out of touch with reality. To be taken seriously in future elections, the DNC needs to do some soul-searching, purge its leadership, and redefine itself. Has it begun to reflect on its mistakes? Has anybody seen any signs of hope in the Left?

I too avoid violence as much as I can, but I too would be willing to use violence if necessary to defend against tyranny; you wouldn't?
 
Of course, I'm ashamed to admit it but there was a time not too long ago Id have used violence for no reason at all.
I can still feel it in me sometimes but since quiting the crack and heroin I control it much better.

I might have read too much into paranoids coments but I took that as threatening me.
 
It's okay man, all of us have violent impulses. When I think of the concept of police raiding homes for drugs alone, I get angry and think "If I were a dealer, I'd go down in a blaze rather than go down for 20 to life," but then reason comes back to me and I realize that I'd never want to kill anyone, it hurts me just to see others in pain.

If anyone threatens violence, report it and it will be dealt with. Anyone.

I'm in the same camp. I voted for Bernie in the primary. When he was screwed out of the nomination by the DNC, I was devastated. I hope to God he runs in 2020 and gets that demagogue narcissist Trump out of the White House. If Lenin (my idol) were still alive and running for office, I'd vote for him above anyone else.

I'm tempted to say that the communism we've seen thus far isn't really communism. As an ideology, it shouldn't descend into despotism. When it does, its closer to totalitarian fascism than 'pure' communism.

True communism shouldnt become a dictatorship, power should be shared and diffuse rather than concentrated. I fear that human nature will forbid 'true' communism from being adopted. It is an ideology very much at odds with the social hierarchy we evolved within. Its probably the reason it ends up being imposed rather than chosen, it is almost antihuman. We are too individualistic to accept equal and unchanging status.

It is, however, an admirable political philosophy with lofty aims that could create a utopian society if we were a totally different animal.

Anyway, I really like the idea of a universal income. I would be happy for my taxes to contribute.
 
How would a universal income work?
Isn't that like a minimum wage or form of benefit, or do you mean everyone gets the same salary?
Sorry if it a stupid question but I haven't heard of it before.
 
It's a liveable income given to everyone. Helps economies survive and decreases the massive wealth disparities as we see in many countries now.
It is also a response to what automation is doing to traditional labour models: further increasing the divide between haves and have-nothings.

I personally favour irradicating capitalism altogether, but in my opinion, universal basic income is a pretty sensible option to get behind until then ;)

No, it means you get a basic living wage, and you can work as much as you want (or not) on top of that.
At least that is my understanding of it. Probably wouldn't be particularly generous basic income level in practice, but people who wish to can make extra money all they wish (or are able).
It's a means of preventing people from becoming destitute in these late-capitalist times.
 
UK already has that, it's called minimum wage and there's 2 amounts, one for under 25 and one for over 25 year olds. I think currently it's around £7.20 for over 25.
 
It's more like a genuine (ie livable) "dole" than minimum wage.

Except everyone gets it, not just the unemployed and infirm.
 
The only problem I see with that is there's too many leeches that can't be arsed to work and I don't think they should benefit from hard working people's tax.
If someone can't work for any reason then fair enough but I don't want to pay for some lazy bastard to sit around doing fuck all.

If someone didn't work because they couldn't be arsed they shouldn't be given more money. If they then decide to comit crimes they should be arrested and charged accordingly.
if someone wants to do fuck all that's fine but why should they get paid for it?
Also I think anyone claiming benefits should be piss tested for drugs, fail 3 tests and suspend all payments.
If you fail a drugs test at work you get sacked so should be same for benefits.
 
^What if they can't find work that pays enough to feed their family? Should they still be left in poverty and up to criminal devices even though the economy could be restructured so as to provide livable wage jobs? Almost everyone wants to work, it's a natural desire for all humans to have some degree of productivity; however, anyone making 7.25/hr won't be able to pay rent or put food on the table, so are we just gonna blame them for being used by corporations and sit back in our privileged jobs and laugh at them for turning to crime when they get evicted?

If you read what I said I'm on about people who can't be arsed to work.
There's plenty where I live that do fuck all, it easier to claim benefits and rob or sell drugs. They get away with it for years until it becomes a lifestyle.

Don't use drugs anymore.
Prob had worse adictions than most people on here though.
 
I just hope you don't correlate drug use with degeneracy; the vast majority of Americans use or have used drugs of some sort or another (if we tie in booze/coffee/cigs) and to say that none of them should have jobs or that they're all degenerates would be foolish and misinformed.

I'm sure most of the people here on BL have jobs, and I'm even more certain that most of us use drugs.
