Hey, title says it all but I'll give you some background.

I'm trying to cut back on the alcohol, successfully so far - this marks two weeks without a drink. I don't intend to stop entirely, still be able to drink at events and such but I want to not be dependant on it.

Now I have a couple of hundred diazepam on me and access to others if needs be - thing is if I have 30mg before bed, 40mg the next day, 40mg later in the day and so on I can end up pretty damn drowsy. Had a nap the other day and went to sleep at 8pm. I'm normally a 8am-1/2am guy.

I'm finding it hard to search for "least hypnotic benzo" on Google so I'd like to ask your advice, or if I'm looking at it at completely the wrong angle! Perhaps something with a shorter half life would be beneficial too?

Thanks in advance!

yeah, those are HUGE doses for you to be taking for what you need it for from the sounds of things. You will find them pretty non drowsy if you drop the dose to 15mg or 20mg a day instead all at once or 10mg in the morning and 10mg in the evening if you like to split your dose. if you carry on with the doses you are doing atm you could cause yourself a serious physial addiction as i have JUST gotfree from so be careful!

Problem there is that I've been using benzos on and off for a long time now, I have this longing feeling. You think it's fine to just taper using diazepam? Drop 10mg less a day or something of that kind?
I can try but it's hard.

I went into a drying out clinic for alcohol. for the first week they used Librium 80mg in devided doses of 20mg per dose next day 70mg and they dropped it by by 10mg per day after a week you were on no benzo's at all. Then the hard part started. Plus the food was shit in that place.

I wonder why the drug of choice for alcohol withdrawal is chlordiazepoxide?

Hi there, yes the standard for acute alcohol withdrawal is usually chlordiazepoxide but diazepam does DEFINATELY also get used for it just as well and its about a million times easier to find!
Yeah that is what you want to be doing but MUCH slower than 10mg a day. If you have been taking roughly 40mg 4x a day then first thing i would do is make urself have a strict medication time and change it so you dose only once in the morning and once at night. If i were you i would be taking 20mg in the morning, maybe 30 for a couple of days and then take 30mg in the evening.
Do this for 2 days for your body to get used to knowing when its next dose is coming and then i would reduce 5mg every 2 days, first for the morning dose then a couple days later the evening dose. Its all a bit comnfusing so what i would do is:
Week 1
Morning - 20mg
Eve - 30mg

Repeat for week 2

Week 3
Morning -15mg
evening - 30mg

Repeat for week 4

Week 5
morning - 15mg
Evening - 25mg

week 6 repeat week 5 dosages

and then just keep that pattern, so reduce either the morning OR the evening dose by 5mg every week.

That should DEFINITELY be a slow enough taper to not cause any problems.

I used to be taking 50-100 of the 10mg blues a day at one point (yes they were def real and not underdosed coz i was scripted by some MORON dr) and now im free of a dependance to them. It was hard, really hard but if i can do it you definitely can mate. Try and stick to your taper plans to stay safe but if u dont drop down 5mg a day when u are meant to dont beat yourself up about it, just carry on the good work of reducing :) If you ever need to chat about benzo recovery or addiction or hell anything....im an insomniac so even if its just u fancy a chat when u cant sleep because of lack of benzos i am here!

I wonder why the drug of choice for alcohol withdrawal is chlordiazepoxide?

Iv often wondered that and i think its because its the benzo with one of the least noticable side effects, IE there isnt as much pleasure to make them be more abused.
from what i remember the actual 'feeling' you get from chlordiazepoxide and an actual 1mg dose of phenazepam are actually quite similar in that you dont get that drunken/light bodied feeling from them that you get with other more abused benzos.
Lorazepam is another one that for me ui can eat a whole pack and not feel any different. Odd

@theatarisfan: Thank you a lot for that post! Right now I'm not following any plan at all, it's just when I get desires I'll take several.

I'm going to try hopping onto mornings and evenings only.

Ask your doctor for "Antabuse" aka disulfiram. This drug makes you extremrely sick when you drink and I guarantee you wont want to drink after the first time drinking while taking that pill. I was put on this when I went to rehab for coke (they didnt want us taking anything that screwed our minds up). It blocks the body's ability to break down the alcohol so you'll puke it out. Another option (not recommended) is to just take something else other than alcohol (substitution method) such as DXM, etc which will give you similar effects in low doses until you break away from your alcohol craving.

Antabuse is a joke if your mates turn up and arrange a night out you just stay off them. Booze is one of the hardest drugs to get off IMHO. You dont have to go to a shady dealers house to buy booze it is just so accessible. Plus if you manage to stay off it for a while you get bombarded with alcohol commercials that make you crave a frosty one I have stopped drinking but still now and again I do have a drink but I leave it until bedtime, Actually drink it in bed while watching the telly then go to sleep. That is the only way I have managed to get my huge alcohol consumption down to a reasonable level

Ugh I know exactly what you mean.

Last night there was a party at the flat (I'm working abroad in Spain at the moment, in a flat with younger people - mostly students) and daaaaaamn, well I had a drink anyway - not much so not a problem but bah. Obviously I couldn't have much alcohol as I'd end up stupified from the combination with benzos. And yeah every time I go to the shop I'm looking to the side and the biggest isle is for alcohol, line upon line of different types of delicious alcohol. It's so cheap here as well! And the stigma is more anti-anti-alcohol. For example I couldn't go and shoot up next door, they'd look down on me as junkie scum, but get drunk till I pass out? No problem! It's just fun! Everybody does it!

Mhm. Well I only had a small glass, I don't want to quit entirely I want to reach the *normal* kind of being able to go out once a month or once a fortnight and have some drinks on a Friday - not the 3 litres a day thing.

Like it was said several times, Diazepam is commonly used for getting off alcohol (and other benzos for that matter). I personally find that it does not give me hypnotic effects anywhere near as much as any other benzo/z-drug I have ever taken. Keep the doses low though if it makes you so drowsy.

In the US, a phenobarbital taper is usually the standard...but like opiates, there's a wide range of drugs you can use in a wide range of combos..

I think switching the drug you're using every few days to something else with similar properties is the way to go....because it seems like the longer you use one particular drug, the higher the risk is for becoming dependent on that drug...

Start with the strongest drug, and work your way down to successively weaker ones...

Phenobarbitone - interesting; binds to a different site. I think that's a clever idea and phenobarbitone is about. But drink on it and you will die.
