Does lamotrigine (Lamictal) have any interactions with tryptamines, dissociatives or stimulants?

Hi ugh1979,

This sort of question is better suited to one of our focus forums such as Basic Drug Discussion (BDD) or Other Drugs (OD) - take a look at the The Dark Side (TDS) guidelines, TDS is here to provide help and support for people struggling with addiction, mental health problems or emotional distress of any kind.. BDD and OD field actual drugs-related HR questions :)

It's hard to answer questions like that, as medical interaction checkers often don't include illegal drugs! What I can say is that if you are prescribed it for epilepsy, even though the drug itself raises the seizure threshold and therefore helps to prevent seizures, combining it with drugs that can lower the threshold and porentially cause seizues (such as amphetamines or cocaine) might not be a good idea for an epileptic person.

I am not sure about dissociatives or tryptamines I'm afraid.

As it is a drugs combination question I'll try it in BDD - hope that is okay!

Sorry, I put it in TDS as I saw it was for in part for mental health issues, and it's for a mental health issue I'm possibly going to be taking it. No problem moving it somewhere you think is more suitable though. :)

It's not for epilepsy I'm asking about lamotrigine, it's for mood stabilisation.

Ah okay :)
TDS deals more with the psychological aspects where as we deal with safety issues, combination questions, dosing queries etc.

There is a drug interaction checker here (and more can be found using google) - it found no interaction with amphetamines, and a moderate interaction with ketamine (see here). It doesn't incluce cocaine or tryptamines.

One thing to bear in mind is that taking drugs which affect your neurotransmitters and play with your general brain chemistry isn't always the best plan if you have mental health problems.. stimulant crashes can be pretty intense, and there is a risk of stimulant-induced psychosis as well. Mind-altering drugs such as dissociatives and tryptamines, while potentially having a positive impact, can also have a negative one and I would be cautious if I were you. I know of someone who greatly exacerbated mental health problems by using a lot of ketamine, and someone else who greatly exacerbated a psychotic episode with a bad psychedelic trip. Not to say that they can't be beneficial, but tread carefully :)

(Sorry, don't mean to sound like I am lecturing! <3)

No problem, always happy to hear what others in the know have to say. :)

Since initially posting I've read lamotrigine is used to reduce the psychoactive effects of ketamine so I'm no longer interested in taking it. I'll look elsewhere for a suitable mood stabiliser as i'm an occasional ket/MXE user and don't want to lose their effects.

I appreciate what you are saying with regards to the use of recreational drugs altering brain chemistry, but as you say, dissociatives and tryptamines are reported to have positive effects on mental health as well and this seems to be the case for me. I've never had any negative effects from them. I don't take anything that gives me a crash these days. I stopped taking amp type drugs a few years ago as they did negatively effect my mental health.
