Sorry if this doesn't belong here, but I didn't see a forum about health in general so I came here.

I have always suffered from really bad mestrual pains. It starts about 1.5- 2 weeks before my period. I get side and abdomen pain and cramps so bad that I literally CANNOT move! If I'm out in public I just have to stand there looking stupid until it passes or if I'm home, slowly make my way to the bed or nearest couch and lay down. And yes, it does affect the sex lives of my partner and I. When are menstrual pains past the point of "normal" in your opinion? Is it when they are so bad they affect your quality of life? Such as not being able to do activities?

I've lived with this for 7 years (I'm 21 btw) and I'm just now realizing(through talking w/ friends) that other women don't have this level of pain. Should I see a doctor? And How should I address this with a doctor; since I'm a former opiate addict and I don't want them to think I'm fishing for pain pills?

Thanks.

Yes, see a doctor. There are lots of other meds you can be given that are suitable. Consider changing your birth control method - you didn't mention what you currently use but the Mirena coil works for a lot of women by stopping their periods altogether. Implanon is also another option.

Stock up on Evening Primrose Oil. If possible, at other times through the month do some exercise - it primes your body to better handle pain. But yeah, definitely see a GP.

I personally don't have terrible cramps so I don't know what that's like BUT you should see a doctor. They can help you. You shouldn't have this much pain. I mean, a few cramps here and there suck but you live with them. If it's really interfering with your life then you need to do something.

You could have bursting cyst brought on by your cycle. You need to see a doc. Maybe as for the nuva ring

Hmm OP it seems like you have Dysmenorrhea which is pain before or during menstrual period. Like what everyone else said, please see a doctor to get a check up on your condition.

Yeah get checked out. I had a friend with your symptoms and she ended up having fibroids. She had a hysterectomy and no more problems.

Thanks for all your replies ladies:)
And to clear up a couple things:
1- I used to have birth control pills, but since I currently have no health insurance, my partner and I just use condoms and sort of a rhythm method type deal.
2- I've been tracking my cycle with a period diary and have learned over the past few months that I have a long cycle. It stays between 32-36 days.
3- through reading, I have learned that some women actually feel their ovulation happening. I'm wondering if the before period pain I'm having is me actually feeling the follicle rupturing, since it only lasts about a day, maybe some discomfort the day after. But I plan on seeing a GP regardless because I have excessive pain during my period as well.
Thanks for all your help.

My sister has a similar sounding condition to yours and she was diagnosed with endometriosis not too long ago. Go see a doctor, it's the only way you'll find out what truly is going on with you.

sorry, just my 2 cents,i have severe bad pain on menstruation AND in the middle of that I have severe pain when my ovulation starts also and the pain is very similar so I defoe know where your coming from. I still get it checked out with a doc though :)

I definitely notice a slight painful twinge around ovulation time, but it's nowhere near as bad as you describe.. I vote that you get it checked by a doctor too. :)
