Lack of sleep

Great replies so far everyone!

I'd just like to add that I'm definitely no angel in this category either. In fact I didn't sleep Saturday night this weekend at all, and went to bed 8.30pm last night. So yeah, not judging anyone who does it!! :D

This weekend was a very rare one for me though, and it still doesn't alter my feelings on the topic. I only don't sleep when I can't , never purposefully just for the hell of it.

One of the things I was curious about when I posted this topic was the potential for long-term effects from continuous sleep deprivation. The thing about personality change is interesting. Are there any possible neurotoxic effects (purely related to lack of sleep?). Could it trigger depression? Are the neurotoxic effects of a drug like say, meth, increased when the brain is not rested?

Anyone know?

If given long enough, sleep patterns will adjust after time. The legacy of staying awake for relatively long periods has meant that my metabolism has adjusted too. For instance, i notice that early to mid week i am normally more hungry than i am on the day or two approaching the weekend because my brain has been conditioned to expect this. Likewise, even if i don't consume any drugs on weekends, i am never tired and can stay up without assistance b/c im so used to it. The human body is amazingly versatile...

in regards to Timmmmyyyyyyyy's (hehe) statement, I knew some elderly italian fishermen dudes who have lived with 2-3 hrs sleep *maximum* per day for about 20-30 years and they don't seem to be any negative effects from talking to them. They mentioned it took about a month of disclipine of doing it daily and making sure you do not fall back asleep and then after that, it feels like the 2-3 hrs sleep is good as 8 hrs sleep each day. Just putting a comment in.. :)

^^ Interesting! Maybe their brain teaches itself to slip quickly into the REM stage (the deep, restorative sleep)? It's often not how long you sleep, but how well , don't you agree? Quality matters. I've had sleeps where it's 8 hours of tossing and turning and wake up tired; and others of only 4 hours which do me just fine.

Some people naturally need less sleep than others, too - I'm a definite 8-9 hour girl, but my partner can easily get by on 6 hours.

Also in regards to your elderly fishing gentlemen wazza - humans actually need *less* sleep as we age .... so I imagine that would also contribute to their ability to do the 2-3 hours thing. Maybe there should be more elderly ravers ;) ;)

Timmmyyy you're so right : we truly can adapt to anything. Look at shift workers. Might not be the ideal situation, but they seem to deal.

I was reading one of those crazy paranoid anti-CIA, FBI, Government websites.... they claimed that tired to experiements on soilders that never need sleep in the 60's and 70's, with cocktail of drugs, and drugs to confuse your mind that your mind "already" had sleep/rested, and they fucked around with soilder's brain chemicals, and the experiement was a total failure, the soilders ended up so messed up.

I wish I knew the webiste that came from, it was a funny and strange site by these paranoid freaks to are so anti-USA government.

Sounds a little like good old fasion italian machoism to me. I might be wrong but the Aust. Army regulation sleep amount is nine hours unless on exercise or in time of war because once "sleep debt" is incurred and continued ie. only a couple of hours a night, coordination, response time and target recognition gets progressivly worse. This happens even under high stress loads and high adrenaline.

Cuddles :)

I know that the Aussie SAS get the highest pharmaceutical grade amphetamines when they have to go on a mission, basically the government allows them to take anything they need to get the job done.

LOL @ "highest pharmaceutical grade amphetamines"... You wouldn't just give them any old speedbombs would ya? ;) heh heh heh

I love sleep dep, I used to start my benders on wedensday just so I'd be sufficiently fucked by friday!
That meetup was smack in the middle of a five day bender, by th end I was hearing voices ;)
Three cheers for sleep dep!

I agree, love the visuals after a 5 day bender, cheers to you!

I have heard of some experiment where a man was not allowed to sleep for many days - basically they would keep waking him up if ever he fell asleep.
What was shocking was that following the experiment he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital and from what i understand never fully recovered.

Urban myth? maybe - but i think it is more than possible.

The longest i will go is only ever to early nightfall of the second night - never ever would i go out a second time as some people i know do or stay up for that next night longer than say 10pm.

I honestly do not understand why people subject themselves to 2,3,4 or God forbid 5 night benders - i have absolutely no respect for that. (I respect the people just not what they are doing to themselves)
Give me one redeming factor in subjecting yourself and your brain to this torture?
If you could actually stay up naturally then by all means do it - but u cant can you? It requires repeated administration of amphetamines which we know can cause a large number of terrible side effects - some semi-permanent.

Why not save those drugs for the next time - even make the next time sooner than later; but put a sleep and something to eat in there between the two big nights.
Its pathetic really - i have seen a few friends do it and it is not a pretty sight. They are not themselves, they are not happy and they are barely human. Its like watching a robot.
Why would anyone want to make themselves behave and think and see and feel like those poor people locked up in mental institutions all over the country? There infliction is for the most part physiological, genetic or both. Your infliction is self-induced; it is self harm of a terrible kind and sad and depressing to watch.

If any people feel its something to be proud of, something that has a positive side then i hope for your own sake you wake up to yourself - maybe you will eventually if you ever bothered to go to sleep.

Many countries use sleep deprivation when interrogating people, because it is not considered "torture" by the geneva convention. But it really fucks you up, every couple of months i get bouts of insomnia, (i was getting them years before i started taking drugs) and it sucks ass, during the day you are not sure if you are awake or dreaming, and way that edward norton talks about insomnia in fight club is pretty much spot on, you have absolutely no recollection of what happened 5 minutes ago, and you will be in the middle of something and then completely forget what you have to do next. The thought of truckies on the roads that are so loaded up with speed that they can drive for 2-3 days straight scares the hell outta me.

The longest I have stayed awake is would be close to 3 days. Totally without drug assistance. 3 Plane legs to the other side of the world and my inability to sleep while seated or with the slightest irritation kept me awake.

I was a giggling mess towards the end and my friends told me I was acting more drug fucked than any bender they had seen me on. I was definately not functioning at normal levels and my memory of conversations had during that time are vague if I can remember them at all. I'd hate to think what secrets I revealed 8(

Because it's fun. (for some of us anyway)

Biscuit, long meth benders may not be nice for you, but understand that everyone is different when it comes to what they find enjoyable

Of course everyone is different.

But also everyone is entitled to an opinion and i have stated mine.

If it makes one person think twice about doing what you describe on a regular basis then its a good thing.

It may be fun i guess but spare a thought for your poor friends, family or workmates that have to put up with you on the 3rd or 4th day. Unless of course u are locked away from the world by this point - where is the fun in that.
And imo it may not be too long before u are literally locked away from the world. I have had friends that have undergone temporary psychosis - for those few hours before they realised they needed help they were literally insane. Who knows what one is potentially capable of at this point - if u have an aggressive or depressive nature then look out.

I just hope its not something people will keep doing for an extended period in their lives - the fun will eventually wear out and if u have gone hard for long enough you will probably wake up and wonder where your life has gone.

I'm no angel and i'm not wanting to get on my high horse and be judgmental - but i do have a lot of trouble understanding it and believe me i've made an effort to understand it from a variety of perspectives.

Each to their own and their own future.

I personally used to find that on the third day (for example a long weekend where I'd have gone out fri/sat, and be considering making the trip out sunday night) I felt far more like a weary soldier forced to drag himself out for another mission, rather than someone who was excited to be going out to have fun. Hehehe.

BigTrancer ;)

PS: The 3rd day techno warriors have not been sent on a mission in a long time.

I totally agree that the lack of sleep can be a contributing factor to the messyness of the night which makes it a shit load more fun. Especially when 36 hrs into the session youve got the couch on the roof of your apartment block with your feet hanging off the edge drinking beers -pretty stupid but pretty fun. (gotta love cronulla!)

I just cant bring myself to let go of the night - you know that feeling that you just cant stop charging until every living cell in your body is screaming GO TO FUCKING BED!! Its a sad moment really 8(

All too well, I used to yell 'century! every time I clocked 100 hours =D

I've had a shocking week of sleep. Two days just kept waking up drenched in sweat, next had headaches/confusion couldnt stop thinking, next there was some really freaky dreams.

I've never had this before, apart from the sweats once. Had about 5 pills and the most ever before was 2.5.... so obvioulsy that was it...I deserved my problems. To top it off, my work work pager went off at a crazy hour..., think a cardiac was very close !!:X
