L dopa neutotoxity

I have heard that l dopa can be neurotoxic?
Can someone explane me the mechanism of l dopa neutotoxity?

I think it's because it's made into dopamine. That process is inherintly neurotoxic by..... oxidation(?). Don't quote me though, I'm not really sure.

yeah, oxidative stress on the dopaminergic neurons. But at the end of the day, you require dopamine, and the metabolic process to arrive at it may be neurotoxic.

IIRC, glutamate receptors are neurotoxic to themselves too. As are a lot of other non neuro related process's toxic or falliable (DNA replication with errors turning into cancer e.g.) something. Your body seems inclined to self destruction some way.

just ordered some L-Dopa so id be interested if anyone can shed some light on this........BUMP

In Australia (where I live) I believe selegiline/rasagiline is prescription only? I received my L-dopa and am taking 300mgs a day in the morning and I really like the effects.

Can someone suggest anyway to stop the toxicity, or offer general advice?

Possible explanation via analogy.

I haven't read up on it, but apparently compounds like safrole get their toxicity by oxidizing to the highly reactive quinone methide (losing the methylene bridge in the process).

That said, MDMA neurotoxicity is supposedly related to the demethylenated product, which is obviously pretty similar to dopamine.

Look up 3,4-dihydroxymethamphetamine.
