Are you serious? I can't tell if your being sarcastic or now but are you guys honestly discrediting the guy because he blew his head off with a shotgun?!?

There's so much more to Kurt Cobain that that.... The replies in this thread were really disappointing to me, but I respect all of your opinions.

I was in my mid to late teens when Kurt and Nirvana were at the peak of their powers and despite many of my friends becoming temporarily obsessed with the whole Sound coming from the States i didn't really get that excited about it at the time .

It wasn't until i got in to my mid 20s that i started listening to Kurt again , i've read various books about him and his lifestyle and these days i have a great deal more admiration for the music .
Nirvana - Where did you sleep last night - Unplugged in new york
Goose bumps everytime .

I agree he made some good music, but people want to see it in some kind of tragic, heroic light, and it isn't.

When is suicide not a tragedy? The fact that a person is hurting so much inside that killing themselves is the only option, is tragic in every way, regardless of who they are. People can say nobody should have to resort to suicide, and of course nobody should have to, but obviously people do. Tragedies, all of them.

Grunge music started as a result of Heavy Metal music basically being dated in the mid-80's. Hair Metal and all that crap was getting huge, so bands like Green River and Soundgarden started writing music that was similar to fashion to the Punk movement of the early 70's. Kurt, being apart of this movement, made music in a sense for himself and not so much to make money. It was for enjoyment. The album Bleach was made on something like a $500 budget. When Grunge blew up, he became exactly what he set out not to become, which was this huge pop icon. He had a lot of problems to begin with, this on top of the realization of being exactly who he never wanted to be resulted in him killing himself.

I know a lot of people say he didn't kill himself, but it's one of those things we'll never know for sure. I personally think he offed himself. It's what I choose to believe. Quite frankly I don't care, I never knew the guy, but he wrote some pretty killer music. Bleach is the only Nirvana album I really care much about though. I've always been more of Soundgarden and Alice In Chains fan

And let's not forget, Temple Of The Dog. Though, I don't care for Pearl Jam either, they did damn well with Chris Cornell on vocals.

i agree with a lot of this.
i just have to state that everything chris cornell did post-superuknown is incredibly shitty. that being said, jesus christ pose is an absolute killer tune.
also, the whole suicide thing? i was there. i did that. and no, i gave no fucks how it may affect the people who could be claimed to be my 'loved ones', mainly because they were a large part of me becoming so fucked in the head to begin with. just to say that suicide is selfish is sort of funny though when you think about it.

chris cornell is an amazing vocalist, and superunknown is anything but shitty. it may not be their best album (badmotorfinger) but but it's still a fantastic record.

^ He said everything POST-Superunknown was shitty, which would be true if Down the Upside didn't exist. Everything post-Down The Upside is pretty shitty, though. Did you ever hear the collaboration he did with Timbaland (Scream)? Probably one of the worst albums ever recorded.

well that's true, although there's a new soundgarden track which isn't great but it isn't as bad as scream lol

and i think every soundgarden album is glorious, theyre one of the best rock bands of all time IMO

Edit:
He lived in pain everyday of his life.
Do that before you judge.
Not sure how long I'd wait before I did the same thing..
so you could all call me selfish and stupid.

This thread's not about how he died anyway...
unless I'm misinterpretting it..in which case..
not such a good thread TC.........

having bought superunknown in 1994 when it came out, it's one of the albums that i have from that time period that i still listen to quite regularly. other ones would be faith no more's angel dust and king for a day (two seriously great albums) and massive attack's mezzanine. i've never listened to down the upside, but the timbaland shit is so seriously, atrociously horrible (as is that song he did for the first james bond movie with daniel craig) that it sort of embarrassed me to be so fond of early to mid period soundgarden. i think i'm going to listen to limo wreck and the day i tried to live now, still my favorite tracks from superunknown.

I voted yes in the poll. Maybe I'm just mad at him because he could be making music still. The kind that would have made him happy.

Understandable on one level, but it's immature to be thinking like that IMO. We could all sit around and be sad that those we love die, but that doesn't allow us to appreciate what they really did. Some of the strongest men ever have killed themselves after setting the world on fire, he's not alone, but he's the only Kurt Cobain.

I voted no, but that's not a reflection on Kurt himself, but rather his fans/his impact on society. I'd much rather there never been a Kurt, simply for the effect he had.

listened to down the upside. it's good, thanks for the recommendation.

and yeah, fell on black days is also on superunknown.

I agree he was misunderstoood and overrated, but not that he was a poser, he just ended up being perceived that way.

I once went back to read some interviews with him because I wanted to understand him. He didn't seem to get any pleasure from his fame and adulation. He killed himself at the height of his fame and fortune, which many would die for.

yeah, he pretty much did.

Aneurysm on "From the Muddy Banks..."

Covers of Vaselines Molly's Lips and Sun of a Gun on Incesticide bonus CD
You can hear him singing melodic punk which is really what he did better than anyone else.

Unplugged Session, Lake of Fire and Pennyroyal Tea

About a Girl on Bleach is awesome too.

...and of course alot of the other better-known songs. I have the entire catalog and several bootlegs. I really like his music, but would I have liked him? Probably not.

Also, Dave Grohl is a fucking douchebag. Just sayin. If Kurt would have turned out like that, I'm fucking glad he is dead.
