Kratom and colonoscopy

Hi all,

I am scheduled for a colonalscopy thursday .
I get IV fentanyl+midazolam when they do the scopy . But i have also been abusing kratom for the past months now sitting on 10 grams per 24 hours . Will it interfere with the fentanyl iv? I won't take kratom for at least 24 hours before .

Kind regards ,

It will raise your tolerance and make the experience less anesthetic than intended, but it will not present a significant danger of respiratory depression.

I was unaware they give fentanyl for colonoscopy... I thought it was just a choice between midazolam or propofol.

I wouldn't worry about it too much, but definitely avoid kratom for 24hr before going in.

Hey thx for your reply . Yes usually you read people taking mostly propofol . But here they also do fent+midazolam. The fent is for the pain mostly . I have done it 2 times now , no propofol is needed .

Speaking of kratom, do any of you know if it causes photosensitivity issues, rashes from exposure to the sun???

I've experienced very odd visual issues from repeated large doses of kratom, as well as audiosensitivity... but not rashes. However, I've had extreme dehydration from large doses which sort of manifested as a skin rash.... no matter how much water I'd drink it would not rehydrate my skin.

I developed a rash after consuming just three capsules of kratom (1.5 grams) and then fishing in river for an hour, complete with facial flushing, and light blistering including on one side of my face at the point of direct sun contact, but also some of same on other parts of body nowhere near exposed to sunlight! I do not use a lot of this crap as I do not like it in general, and I never noticed such before. After quick investigation it seems that such is fucking commonplace, and wouldn't you know it, one of the myriad of drugs verboten with this crap is Benadryl! It wasn't the gabapentin that did this, and it wasn't the lisinopril either, it had to be the kratom.

to me it sounds like you got a rash from the river water

I would not be shocked to hear about people getting sick from unscrupulously farmed kratom, but I think that is more rare than someone catching a rash from river water.

there is a lot of sketchy kratom out there that would not meet FDA standards for pathogen contamination

Always possible, however, the bulk of rash was around back of my neck, one small side of face, and one reddened raised area of skin on my stomach very close to being a hive, but was not, I was wearing a tee-shirt so stomach was never exposed to sunlight.

Not one part of my body so affected was ever immersed within the river water, I was wading the river whilst casting inline spinners for trout, water never came above my groin, though there were some other small reddened areas on my legs which were, these were small like bug bites, which is what I thought they were until later observations.

That is anyone's guess. Kratom is an Opioid. Rather, Mitragynine(s) are Opiod agnoist substances and these Mitragynines are responsible for the primary effects of Kratom. You're Opioid tolerance will lessen the effect of the Fentanyl. I don't believe it's going to lead to anything serious though. It's just a colonoscopy not a major invasive surgery. The fact that you will have Midazolam (Versed) going at the same time means you're likely going to be not fully-conscious regardles of what happens.

I'm assuming that they're just putting you under for twilight sleep. If they start giving you the drip and you find that you're still fully awake to a distressing degree, then you can tell them. If you're not conscious, then you don't really have a problem anyway. Whatever happens, it's not anything that I would be overly worried about.

You'll be fine :)

I am someone that actually doesn't like the idea of going total under like with propofol. The idea scares me . I gonna ask the doc if he can give an exact dose of fent where i am between feeling ultra comfy and nodding , like the sweet spot .

If you care to, you could tell them the extent of your history with Kratom, which should qualify you to receive Propofol (unless your insurance is completely terrible). Taking the best nap ever after the worst night of prepping for colonoscopy is a good thing.

In truth, Propofol is the safer option regarding anesthesia, for multiple reasons. Significantly fewer side effects, very safe long established medication, given by highly trained experts, in the exact environment it is meant to be used in. Decreases the risk of complication as you’ll be asleep and not moving. In my educated and experienced opinion, anyway. ;)

That depends a lot on your anesthesiologist and the doctor ordering the procedure. For instance, I had a couple of fairly impacted wisdom teeth that required very heavy, not-quite-total sedation. I remember specifically it was Diazepam, Fentanyl and Midazolam, which is pretty standard I guess.

She kept asking me if I needed more and I kept saying yes. My last memory was asking for more. She apparently started the operation whenever I stopped being able to ask for more. This sort of thing is also pretty standard for anesthesiologists. If your experience is anything like mine, they will probably be able to adjust it to your liking.

Just don't tell them you "wanna nod" or you'll be getting your colonoscopy with nothing but a piece of wood to bite down on and a Redbook.

I am not sure , you need to pay for propofol . It needs more monitoring and you can't drive etc for much longer compared to fent+mida. They give 2 antogonist after the procedure is done so you have zero side effects unlike propofol which needed to be sleep off .
