For those that haven't came across it:

Opinions?

I've only had it twice or so, and it was pre acid trip and found it excellent for making me feel ready and healthy/clean for it. While I eat meat I tend to go a lot more veggie/vegan when on psychedelics and before/around them just because it seems to stop any nausea.

I'm also currently detoxing myself off drugs and this is exactly the sort've thing you'd be wanting. I'm relatively new to it all though, a friend of mine swears by it, drinking a pint a day! But he's also big into his other vegan/healthy fixes, while the furthest I go is a bit of fish oil and multi vitamins.

Love the stuff, I hear the Google headquarters in Mountain View have installed machines that dispense it free for all employees

Must be the secret of their world domination , lol

I drink a lot of it, and rotate it with Tulsi Tea and Yerba Mate

Planning to start cultivating or whatever the word would be and start making some relatively soon hopefully :) only ever tried home brewed stuff as opposed to the prepackaged drinks. I've actually never came across the drinks. I haven't heard of Tulsi Tea and Yerba Mate either so I'll have to have a look into them! Thanks!

I've made a few batches. It's pretty good, but make sure that you use a reputable recipe, and if you scale up, double check your figures. My last batch was 5 gallons, and I wound up throwing it ALL out because it was undrinkably sweet. Because I didn't re-use the mother quickly enough (I was seriously put off by it), it wound up going feral and I had to throw it out.

As with most other things, homemade >>> bought. Each batch doubles the amount of mother, so if you have access to homebrew then you could well have access to your own mother (culture).

I'm actually quite lucky in that I have someone who is extremely experienced with the stuff and has refined many recipes over the years and travels to China etc to get supplies for it. They are willing to provide me with a starter culture to get things going. So I suspect, provided I was able to make it all correctly I'd have some lovely stuff! The Kombucha of theirs, which I tried that sparked my interest, was amazing tasting, could have drank it all day!

Do you feel it is worth doing though for my own health benefit? I like to try and stay healthy as I cain a lot of drugs and alcohol, so am interested in various ways to balance it out.

any brewers out there have tips for how to make kombucha more carbonated? i love how the commercial stuff is really fizzy but the stuff i brew at home never ends up like that

Add a little bit of extra sugar in the bottling step. There will be a little planktonic bacteria kicking around that will eat it up, and in the absence of oxygen should make a bit more CO2.

Me too, Tulsi Kombucha is to live for!

Once I replace my juicer, my intention is to start brewing my own. If anyone has any recipes please do share!

could someone post a link to a solid set of instructions of a way to make kombucha

i would already have the culture, just need some steps to follow which involve using medicinal tea's etc and ginger

What made my latest brews probably way more carbonated, and took the taste to an higher level.
Was this recipe (creation of my own) take 1/2 green/ white tea and 1/2 Pu Ehr or other black tea.
Seep the green/ white tea in kombucha for 6 hours instead of 65 celcius water, way better for your green tea antioxidants anyway.
Using unboiled spring water instead of boiled water for your brew, brewing cooks air out of the water was the idea.
One of the kombucha bacteria is an aerobic one, needs air.

When I have some time on hand I will post my "raw" Kombucha recipe as requested above.

5gr total thee/ liter 2.5gr yellow or white/ green tea seeped for at least 6hours in kombucha fluid 2.5gr pu ehr or other black tea brewed
80gr dried sugar cane juice per liter and if you have extra cash you can use coconut blossum sugar that seems to increase carbonation and taste
use qualility spring water uncooked except for the sugar I boiled the water, but if your sugar is raw I would just mix with cold water
be royal on the ammmount of kombucha starter fluid at least 1/4 of the total volume but my memory is getting real rusty on that part

Bottling with an bit of extracted ginger water will extremely increase carbonation. Hope you will have fun specialK my last brew is so long ago it sunken away deeply

I've started drinking this again after a couple-year-long hiatus... And I'm quite addicted.

Its getting expensive.

I need to stop so I can pay my car payment.

Teasing the idea of making it myself.

I haven't tried kombucha yet. I was concerned that it was another fad that might not be justified.

There's lots I could read about it online, but I'm curious what your experiences are of it? I mean, what effects did you feel in your body? Any downsides? ("You" = everyone in this thread.)

I have had more energy, it seems. I am running up and down the steps to my apartment more often. May be simply the b vitamins. I as you might remember have a limited diet, so the boost might be felt for me, but some maybe not.

Otherwise, I get a slight ... buzz... from it. Apparently this isn't the alcohol, but some antioxidant(s), I think I heard. Feels good, especially at first.

Not sure if sauerkraut had anything to do with it too, or not, but my indigestion problems seem better. Sauerkraut has been said to benefit those with both high and low stomach acid. But Kombucha seemed to have an effect as well.

Downsides... None so far, that I can be sure about. Except my wallet.

Sauerkraut is a ferment which can be good for people with weak digestion. As for the B vitamins in kombucha... well, I give myself B12 injections once a week and I eat B rich foods regularly.

I'm just wondering how special kombucha really is?

From what I was able to gather, is that may have some cleansing benefits for the liver, and especially for people with diabetes.

Something called glucaric acid (DSL or D-Saccharic acid 1,4-lactone) is one of the compounds found in kombucha. This study: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23138840 ...shows promising results in liver function in diabetic rats , and references a pancreas study.

(added a study which has looked at various kombucha fermentation states to find DSL in kombucha http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20015711 )

I honestly can't vouch for it either way.
seems like it would be a cool project to try to cultivate it tho
