A couple of years back, about 6-7, my house mate and I bought a khat plant. We planted it on a farm property in WA. It has been well looked after and is flourishing superbly.

We tried chewing a few leaves a couple of months back, but, we felt little effect. I've heard of people making a tea using the leaves? Any help would be greatly appreciated for the best ingestion methods.

Cheers in advance

It's usually chewed, made into a tea, placed between the teeth and the gums, or under the tongue. I don't know much about farming it, but I know it has cathinones which produce pronounced stimulatory effects. So if done right, you should definitely be feeling something.

Here are two ways on how to prepare a tea:

1- Dry khat tea preparation

  • Put the dry leaves in a glass, bowl or jug in shallow water for a few hours and leave until the water has absorbed the leaves and it turns green.
  • The amount of water depends on the amount of dry leaves. For each 250g of khat put only about 50ml of water.
  • Once the khat is moist you can then mix it and prepare like any tea.
  • Instead of putting 50ml of water for each 250g of khat, you can just wash the khat well, put it in a cotton container and squeeze it dry.

2- Fresh khat preparation

  • Break the soft parts of the twigs and leaves to create a moist mix.
  • Keep the fresh khat mix in a plastic bag and poke holes with a needle or similar to keep the moisture in while drying out the fresh khat leaves.
  • Leave the mix to dry for a day or two, however do not let it completely dry out (like a crisp!).

Also you can just boil the dry or fresh leaves directly but the disadvantages is that you loose on the chance to filter khat before drinking it in the case of preparing with dried khat.

Thanks so much man! We chewed it fresh but we were also drinking quite heavily which I think might have countered the khat. I'm really looking foward to trying the above methods when I get back to WA in March.

That's most likely the answer. Khat operates on norepinephrine (adrenaline) which GABA agonists such as alcohol inhibit (deactivate).

Haha, cheers once again! I'll make an effort not to drink before our next consumption. I'm going to try both the methods you outlined above. I'll report back with which one provided the most stimulation and quickest onset of effects.

Actives in this are cathine and cathinone.

Cathine is mainly a NRA, but also has DRA properties.

Cathinone seems to be primarily a DRA, with some NRA properties. (If someone can confirm this, the information on the mechanism at work here is sparse)

Seems like a straight, no frills stim and i would be interested in trying this one out.

It's legal in a lot of countries. Not sure about Canada. In Western Australia the government cut down most of the Khat plants that were growing wild. They did this because Western Australia has a high poplation of people from North Africa and some of the African community were doing all sorts of things to get to khat trees growing in private properties.

Check out your local botanical garden, it might be growing freely in there.
