One of the world's most wanted drugs traffickers has been arrested, Mexico's security forces say.

Police say Ivan Velazquez Caballero, known both as El Taliban and as Z-50, is the commander of the violent criminal network, the Zetas.

He is thought to have controlled some of the most important drug routes into the United States.

The arrest comes days after it was reported that he had split from the Zetas and joined a rival cartel.

Ivan Velazquez, who was captured by marines in the city of San Luis Potosi, is said to have ruled his territory with cold brutality.

He had a reward of 30m pesos ($2.3m, £1.5m) on his head.

Police say he was the group's main leader in the states of Zacatecas, Nuevo Leon and San Luis Potosi.

He is said to have been at war with another top leader of the gang, Miguel Trevino, known as Z-40.

Police believe a recent surge in mass killings was due to rivalry between the two.

Earlier this month, it became clear that the Zetas had split into two factions.

And more recently, a notice was released saying Ivan Velazquez had joined forces with the Gulf Cartel.

In-fighting

The Zetas were enforcers for the Gulf Cartel in the 1990s.

By 2005, they had broken away and started to run criminal enterprises themselves.

Analysts say in-fighting within such a large and multi-faceted organisation like the Zetas is to be expected, with so many groups jossling for overall control.

The BBC's Will Grant, in Mexico City, says the government may point to the arrest as an example that its military strategy against the drug cartels has worked.

But critics say the Zetas were allowed to become too powerful under the outgoing administration, to the point that they control huge swathes of north-eastern Mexico.

I really believe the US and Mexican governments are involved with the zetas

^ Nah US marines are supposedly hunting them in Guatemala right now, if anything though maybe Sinaloa but not The Z

But yeah, this does nothing, as soon as a plaza jefe, as they would say, gets captured at least 5 more guys are waiting to take his place

This is why the kingpin act will never truly work
Shit is just too lucrative for any of them to stop

Plus most down there have been born into it, talking about 3 or 4 generations of mostly all narcos

The US trained the Zeta leaders for counter-narcotics, then they deserted and became hitmen8(. Does seem like Mexico and the US are playing favorites with some sides.

One less roadblock for El Chapo.

^ Exactly, when a boss goes down in these cartels, most of the time it creates a power vacuum which then creates infighting and splitting of cartels and alliances which just creates more violence

Also most of the founding members of the zetas that were trained by the US have already been captured or killed, I'm pretty sure there are only like 3 or 4 left maybe if that, one being the supreme leader which there has been rumor that he's dead also. But still the zetas grew faster and larger than any other cartel in Mexico, and what I was talking about earlier about the multi generation narcos, with the z they totally disregarded that and the traditional rules of not beheading family members and shit

And Chapo's people have already made there way into Nuevo Laredo, which is the zetas main plaza and trafficking route, because it's the largest boarder crossing with the most cargo going back in forth out of all the Mex to US crossing points

So with the splitting of the z, Sinaloa and CDG will definitely try to capitalize on it for sure

But anyway, I see no possible end to this horrible war down there, the huge amount of money to be made is insane to imagine, why would anyone want it to end besides the innocents, everyone else is happy off getting paid

So basically your saying that we will still have plenty of marijuana and cocaine. :)
