my friend had recently had an operation to have 3 stents placed in his heart.

He had 3x arteries that were 90% blocked. He had a family history of heart issues, and was a heavy drinker up until 3 years ago when he quit.

We do like to party together, with stims and ket being our go too. Obviously now stims would not be a good idea post operation but we’re wondering where Ket would now be off the table?

He’s not on beta blockers but he is on blood thinners. I’ve read the risk levels are quite low for anything to happen after the stents are fully healed into the arteries which could take up to a year.

Ketamine is not absolutely contraindicated in people who have had triple bypasses, but I'd proceed with extreme caution. Ketamine increases heart rate, blood pressure and myocardial oxygen demand.

Typically the first line option for anaesthesia is ketamine, but if a patient has had a triple bypass that usually shifts towards something that doesn't increase cardiac output like etomidate.

Personally I'd say your friends drug using days are over if he wants a long life. If he insists, do not do it at the same time as him. It will be your responsibility to monitor him for a cardiac event.

Are u talking about me?? Seriously I had the same thing. Plus I was on methadone. So 18 months later. I got a heart transplant. They used ketamine to put me out for at least 30 hours. I know I was out for 3 days. I had some crazy hallucinations, and thankfully I felt no pain. Woke up. Pushed the button for dilaudid iv. Still recovering. Did some k last Friday !! I’m so depressed, it’s that or I just give up on everything.

I went through something very similar. I was also on methadone, and about 18 months later I ended up needing a heart transplant. They used ketamine to keep me under for quite a long time—I was out for a few days. I had some intense hallucinations, but thankfully I didn’t feel any pain. When I woke up, I used the IV dilaudid for relief. I’m still in recovery, and it’s been really tough mentally. I’ve been feeling pretty low lately and trying to cope with it all.
