I have searched for the answers to these specific questions to no avail (the megathread, other forums, this forum, *big psych website*, etc.

I ordered some Kava root from an online retailer and have a few questions regarding preparation.

1. Can I use a french press to soak and then press instead of wringing a filter (cloth)?
2. What is a usual dose in tablespoons of Kava root powder?
3. Can I make a whole pitcher's worth and store it in the fridge?
4. Will soy milk help with the emulsification of the Kavalactones?

Thanks!

Mods, can this be or should this be moved to basic drug discussion?

I feel like there would be more knowledge of this kinda thing there...

1> Yes, but massaging the powder in warm water through a fine cloth filter or fine nylon filter works much better for releasing the k-lactones. This is how its traditionally prepared, and i think they got it figured out in that respect (south pacific native islanders).

2> One tablespoon can vary in weight, depending on a # of factors regarding the physical composition of the root material. Coule be anywhere from 3-5g, but thats a good starter dose, and its not super important to on the point, just start small and figure out how potent it is first. 1 tsb is good, just drink it over the course of a half hour or so to see how strong it is before you down it all.

3> yes, but i find freshly made warm water kava tea to be the best in terms of efficacy and taste. To each his own, but cold kava just isn't very appealing to me, whereas warm kava is pretty palatable, and it also helps absorb the lactones better.

4> any kind of fat will help here, soy, regular milk, etc. It works good with just water ime, but a bit of added lecithin (or your preference of a lipid) does make more potent kava imho.

IMHO the best way to do it is like this-

Take a bowl of water and nuke it unitl its warm but not hot.
put root powder in a fine cotton sheet, or a fine nylon mesh "bag".
Massage the bag for a minute or so, let it sit a few minutes, massage again, and then drain.
Repeat that 2x more times, and combine all 3 "pulls".

Also, don't take kava with anything else your first time. Theres all kinds of interactions, gabergic, maoi compounds, etc. Be sure what your taking is kosher with kava, i've gotton some nasty headaches because i diddn't do so on a # of ocassions.

Shit, now i want to go make some kava, haven't had any for months now it seems. It would compliment the bali kratom i'm on right now very well. Also is great with cannabis. Perhaps....

Thanks for answering the questions... It looks like the coffee press will either be too fine of a screen and create too much pressure (read two stories of that). Also, you wouldn't get the kneading like you said.

The bag I got is 250 grams, and I don't have a scale so I'm going to go with a tablespoon and go from there. It's too bad there isn't a better outline for dosing because of all the variables...

What do you mean about massaging the bag? Does that mean the root is wet and you are 'milking' the kavalactones out? You said drain, so I'm guessing that's not what you meant. Sorry, I'm just a little confused about that part

No prob, massaging means just kneading the bag in warm water that has your kava in it. Helps release the lactones as you suspect. And as far as draining, i mean knead your kava in 3 bowls of warm water, and combine. Rather than just one bowl, and throwing out the still usable and potent root material. Like extractions if you've ever dabbled in them, you do three "pulls" (in this case with warm water) to get as much as the active out as possible.

Oh okay, so basically it is three separate 'extractions' becasuse the root is still somewhat potent after one 'session' of kneading and you're just getting everything it's got in it?

Bingo. ;)

I figured that out after re-usign some kava i only brewed once, and found out it stil gave pretty decent affects, just a bit less intense.

so sorta like a warm water extraction as opposed to c.w.e ?? i got a few ounces coming from hawaii . is there noticable differences between hawaiin and fijian kava? i made sure its 100% root powder. not the potentially harmful whole plant material
