Hello Bluelight,
So, after hearing about it frequently over the years, I've finally ordered some kava to try it out for myself. It's from an ethnobotanical website I've come to rely on, in the form of a powdered root. I've spent about thirty minutes sifting through various corners of the internet and the megathread, but I can't seem to find conclusive information on a few aspects of it.
I plan on making it into a tea. I've heard that the active ingredient(s?) is not that water soluble, so I'm going to use probably one part water, one part whole milk, both cold, and let it steep overnight. First question, is the addition of fat to the brew necessary, or was this misinformation?
Moving on-- I'd like to make enough for myself and a couple of friends to have a decent amount for our first experience (we plan on drinking it slowly over the course of an hour or two.) However, I really can't find conclusive information on what a moderate recreational dose of the root is considered. Obviously, quality is going to vary from source to source, but with that in mind, what would you guys recommend in terms of grams for each user to have a solid, noticeable dose? As well, what kind of ratio of kava to water/milk mix am I going to want?
As for the effects--will the kava be as intoxicating as alcohol, in such that motor skills are impaired and driving is out of the question? In being responsible users, I plan on having nobody there that needs to leave for several hours, but it's still nice information to have. How long do the effects of a moderate dose generally last? Is there any hangover to speak of.
Any prudent information I may have overlooked, or tips from experienced users would be greatly appreciated as well. Sorry for the length of this post, I'd just like to be as informed as possible on this matter.
As always, thanks Bluelight, and have a good night!
